About this listen

"I am the unhinged...and the world is my asylum".

Thirteen-year old Harper is in therapy for the death of her mother. And that's saying nothing of the trafficking victim she rescued from her next door neighbor's cellar.

As her father becomes embroiled in a criminal case that threatens to destroy their lives, the despondent teenager is left to confide in her detached and aloof therapist Charlotte. If the woman who she began seeing to cope with Nancy's suicide can't help her through these harrowing events, Harper's shattered family stands to be permanently damaged.

Will the mysterious woman that Harper saved from slavery be the key to healing the devastated Whitaker family? Or will their involvement destroy everything they have left?

Dark YA

I was surprised first that this book was YA, and then again at how dark, depressing and "down" it turned out to be. The characters are not very sympathetic or endearing, yet the story was compelling enough to carry my attention throughout. It's a different, dark YA with mature themes that will grab you and hold on until the end.

One Emotional Ride

I really enjoyed this story. The emotional depth portrayed was as real as if you the reader were in Harper's shoes. I was intrigued from beginning to end and highly recommend it for those who love books about family drama, mysteries, and a focus on inner emotional turmoil. Overall a great read and the narration was expertly performed.

Captivating story

The narration was expertly done. I enjoyed the story and it kept me engaged and interested throughout. There is mystery, family drama, crime, moral dilemmas and was highly emotional exploring into mental health issues as well. I listened to it twice because there is so much to unpack and pay attention to. A very well-written story. Really enjoyed it!

Great story! Loved the narration!

This story kept me hanging on every word as I listened to the thrilling plot unravel. The aspects of mental health and dealing with life altering events were dead on realistic. I believed these characters and was not distracted from their world for even a second.
