About this listen

A family Gwen did not know she had. A city of dubious ties in which she is an outsider. A hostile world of hierarchy and order seeking to exploit her powers of the Void...

Now in the middle of her University years at Fudan, Shanghai, Gwen will carve out a bloody niche for herself and her friends, wrought from the sheer presence of her beauty and her terror, aided by her zippy Ariel and an all-consuming Caliban.

Gwen's adventures continue as she reconnects with her father's Clan and makes peace with a past she is only beginning to discover. Join her endeavours as she ventures into the hive cities of Shanghai's Districts, haunted by a scarlet-eyed avenger seeking redress against her path of destruction.

This story is just as good as I remember from Royal Road or YouTube. A great listen and awesome plot

Love this story

I started out reading this on Royal Road, and bought the Audible books because I enjoyed it that much 👍

A fun series

Overall it's enjoyable passively. Decent Magic System. Diverse characters. My main issue is the MC. I dislike "murder hobos" greatly but Gwen is annoyingly against killing to defend herself and others despite all her posturing. Despite the "lesson" Gunther taught her. Despite killing faceless. Despite killing that random girl in the dungeon. Her attempts to avoid killing someone seems antithetical to her character, past choices, and future plans.
Her frantically trying to convince her group to avoid fighting and killing a group of slavers who have set up a trap specially for them so they can be captured having who knows what be done to them. Her calling it cold blooded premeditated murder as her justification to avoid it all. Not to mention her constant semi- holier than thou preaching , but sees no benefit in killing a group of people who abduct and sell people against their will. And that by her inaction and "good intentions" they would be allowed to continue their actions unimpeded. It's irritating.
Then there's her inconsistent choices in sharing information. She'll tell everyone everything about herself but when she has an odd reaction upon seeing the Kirin amulet, where it literally forces her attention towards it and she receives an intense amount of vertigo, she deigns not to talk to anyone about it. Even when asked directly by someone who cares, who she trusts, and would be knowledgeable about the situation.
Then there's the lack of "learning" in regards to magic combat against non life and death situations. She's predictable and has been told so on multiple occasions and yet she continues to not change and gets caught and called out more for it. You're telling me someone whose able to understand and was taught social and economic theories and applications is unable to comprehend the single thought of "Maybe I should be flexible and variable with my many skills so people have a harder time countering and predicting me because of how many fights I have and will end up in." For someone who is supposedly extremely self aware, her lack of acknowledgement of her predictability is grating. Plus the several people around and near her age are more mature and adult than she is. Despite being an adult herself who ran a company of relative renown previously.

It's fine but the MC is inconsistent at times.

I have been following this series for a while and look forward to more coming out. It is possible to find the author on Royal Road, but I am happy to support them, especially for these audio editions!

Another Great One

Been enjoying the series. This one covers Gwen's early days in China. The narrator is great. She gave all the characters unique voices. I loved how she handled Babulya. There is a good mix of dialogue, action and growth in this book. Love the way the author handles the world building and how magic affects civilization.
