About this listen

Internationally acclaimed and award-winning crime author Thomas Mullen returns with a bold, fresh look at the social and political upheaval that shook Atlanta during the era of Jim Crow and the Red Scare.

It's 1955 and ex-cop Tommy Smith is working as a crime writer for the only daily black newspaper in America when his boss, a prominent publisher with a politically complex past, turns up murdered, a group of corrupt white cops takes the opportunity to make sure Smith is prime suspect. To clear his name, Smith will need to enlist the help of his old boss, the resilient Sergeant McInnis - who has logged seven difficult years as the only white cop in a black precinct.

As the Montgomery Bus Boycott begins and white Atlantans recoil from the burgeoning Civil Rights movement, McInnis finds himself at a crossroads. He's finally been offered the opportunity to transfer back to the white headquarters, but it's too good to be true. It's up to him to figure out what strings are attached to the offer, and what the change will mean for his subordinate officers and his city as a whole. As anti-Communist fervor and racial fears stoke the city, Smith and McInnis must wander through a gauntlet of federal agents, dirty cops, and crime bosses to find the truth.

Another solid entry in this quality mystery series. Educational, entertaining and enlightening. Smith, Boggs and MacInnis continue to get more complex as characters making the stories more nuanced and intricate,. Well done.

As a white elementary school child who began as an unaware participant in the integration of Atlanta Public Schools, I liked hearing about the characters who represented all the brave individuals who fought in their own ways to advance the equal rights of all people. Thomas Mullen’s books, Dark Town, Lightning Men, and Midnight Atlanta are some of my most favorite novels.

So interesting to hear more about the early progress of the civil rights movement

This was a great read to start the summer. Its going to be tough to top it the rest of my summer rears. It was a captivating tale of history, with real characters, so defined by the performance.

Enjoyed the story

My expectations were low. I said to myself. Can Thomas do it again. Boy does this book deliver. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out who killed Bishop. I couldn’t figure it out and I guarantee that you won’t either. The story is gripping. All the different emotions, moral challenges, racial disparities. It’s just packed with so much. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.

BOOK 3. Oh my…A+++

I have enjoyed all of Thomas Mullen"s books. The history is eye-opening, the writing is quite good, but the narration of this book spoiled it. There was not enough variations of voices and tone. If I hadn't known the author's work, I would have abandoned it.

Narration spoiled story
