Award-winning New York Times bestselling author S. A. Cosby’s debut novel My Darkest Prayer is republished in a new edition, with a new introduction from the author.

“I handle the bodies.”

Whether it's working at his cousin's funeral home or tossing around the local riffraff at his favorite bar, Nathan Waymaker is a man who knows how to handle the bodies. A former marine and sheriff's deputy, Nathan has built a reputation in his small Southern town as a man who can help when all other avenues have been exhausted. When a beloved local minister is found dead, his parishioners ask Nathan to make sure the death isn’t swept under the rug.

What starts out as an easy payday soon descends into a maze of mayhem filled with wannabe gangsters, vicious crime lords, porn stars, crooked police officers, and a particularly treacherous preacher and his mysterious wife. Nathan must use all his varied skills and some of his wit to navigate the murky waters of small town corruption even as dark secrets of his own threaten to come to the surface.

Editorial Review

Can I get a witness?
S.A. Cosby sure has a way with words, and narrator Adam Lazarre-White delivers them seamlessly as he inhabits Nathan Waymaker, the main character, an ex-Marine, ex-cop now working in his cousin’s funeral home. I loved how Waymaker described someone’s teeth as being so spread apart they should have a sign warning “next tooth a mile away.” In Black communities, funeral homes and churches are drama hubs for folks dead or alive, as Cosby demonstrates. In this case, a beloved minister is found dead. The church ladies aren’t buying suicide and ask Waymaker to help. There’s sex, drugs, and very little rock and roll in this heart-pounding thriller replete with a series of twists and turns and brawls and bullets until the truth comes to light. The main character Nathan drew me into his world immediately. I always think it's lazy for a writer to say the character looks like XXX. Not in this case because Nathan did look like the Rock even before the words were spoken. The fight scenes were excellent, and I rooted for Nathan and Skunk every time. A lot of similes but they were spot on, and they added to the picture Cosby was painting. Language was rough and there was a lot of sex talk, but it didn't seem cheap. Taking that into consideration, it might not be for everyone. I got past it just fine. I'm glad Casby moved on from short stories to write novels. Wish I had that confidence in my writing:)
Fast moving. Not a word wasted. Knowing his background helped me understand why the character did what he did.

I was skeptical...It was Great

I have read all of his books and they are all great! Yes it has some colorful language and sex scenes, but how can you tell a real story and not in these days and times. Great book and I cannot wait for the next!

S A Crosby is my favorite author, can’t miss

I LOVE this story and the narrator excellent. This was my third book by this author and he did not disappoint. You will like the main character and all of his sometimes " questionable " friends. The story will remind you of the old adage, "no good deed goes unpunished." Along with telling a good story, the author has a delicious sense of humor. Buy the book! You will not be disappointed. I put this author on my must read list. Walter Mosley move over, there's a new kid on the block and his name is S. A. Cosby. L. H. H.

My Darkest Prayer was such an exciting book. Nathan an assistant mortician who had worked for tge sheriff's department. He had suffered great personal loss... but got tangled up in sex, murder, and intrigue when a local mega pastor is killed.

S.A. Cosby is my best find of the last year

I've read each of Cosby's novels. He has become one of my favorite authors. As a Virginian resident, I appreciate his insider's look at small town politics and minds. Spot on. I believe this was his first book. His writing has only been perfected. Can't wait for his next book.

Not My Favorite Cosby Yet Still Good

So much focus on urban cities people often forget what is going on in rural communities. This portrayal captures intimate relationships, the complexities of family and extended family dynamics, and the intersection of religion, politics and corruption where you least expect. The over arching influences of race and power are so disturbingly real. If you don’t live in denial, you can relate. Great first novel. Descriptive and sophisticated. Engaging plot and characters. Great narration, convincing voices and emotions. Highly recommend!
