Jack Flanders has inherited the Inverness mansion from his late aunt, Lady Jowls. While Jack Flanders is scuba diving in the great barrier reef off Belize, he discovers a sunken pirate ship. On board are two skeletons poised as though playing chess, and every time he returns, the pieces have been moved. One of the pieces looks a lot like Jack.

While Jack Flanders is being chased by a zombie, his phone rings. It's Mojo waking Jack from his nightmare and inviting him to New Orleans. Later, strolling through the French Quarter, Jack is amazed to see Claudine, from Montreal. Or had he just met a voodoo priestess who can shapeshift into the woman of his dreams? Invisible balls of energy are causing hallucinations within the walled city of Old Quebec. Jack and Mojo try to locate the source of these "eyes". When a little girl with pigtails, smoking a cigar, is seen about town, Jack suspects Litte Frieda is involved. When Jack speaks to Claudine on his cell, she appears before him; when he hangs up, she vanishes.

Jesse, a young anthropologist, disappears somewhere in the highlands of West Sumatra, and Jack is hired to find her. There's evidence that she was involved in the Kabut cult, a secret society practicing ancient tribal magic. Jack travels to Bukittinggi as the city erupts in the exotic sounds of celebration at the end of Ramadan, the Moslem holy month of fasting. Sounds just dandy - until a mist swirls around him, and he's staring into the gaping mouth of a giant, swirling vortex.

Somewhere in the tropics, yet another beach resort is being built. As they bulldoze a road through a valley the locals consider sacred (the dwelling of a Nature Spirit), the jungle begins to spring up everywhere else.
