It is London 1915 and Great Britain is at war with Germany. Stylish lady detective Miss Isabel Hewitt's manservant Clarke is away in Flanders serving in the Royal Medical Corps. Isabel is anxious for his safety.
On the Home Front she has become involved with the Women's Emergency Corps. Through this work she has met a tall, well-built young woman named Hattie Peach. Hattie is now her maid and driver. Isabel is coping with her new life and then someone murders two girls from the WEC.
These take place in Shoreditch and there are fears that Jack the Ripper may be back. Isabel is asked to investigate and she embarks on a journey which becomes both emotional and very dangerous indeed.

Miss Hewitt Investigates the Return of the Ripper is a short audiobook (2 hours, 19 minutes), but it packs plenty of plot and character development into the short piece. The storyline has real interest to it, with a creative plot and an interesting conclusion. I enjoyed the characters of Isabelle and her new assistant, Hattie Peach. But I would have liked more about the historical era, which doesn't have a lot of depictions.
Julia Eve performs the audio edition of this book, taking us in time travel back to 1915 England. With careful diction, Eve modulates between the accents of the different classes and uses clearly defined voices for each of the characters. Her performance lives up to the excitement of the book, and I look forward to hearing her narrate the other two books in this trilogy.
I appreciated listening to Miss Hewitt Investigates the Return of the Ripper. It was a fairly light, enjoyable listen with creative elements to it. If it had just had more historical detail, I would have especially liked it, but even without that, I give the book five stars.

She gathers her friends and staff around her to quickly solve these crimes as she outwits the murderer.
It is a fast paced and nicely written story by Linda Stephenson and I listened to the audiobook version, entertained by Julia Eve with her interesting narration.
I requested and received a promotional copy of the audiobook and my voluntary and unbiased review is recorded above.

Although Return of the Ripper appears to be the first in the Miss Hewitt Investigates series, I felt like I came into the middle of the series. How are her investigation skills established enough to be hired to find a killer? Also, Miss Hewitts’s manservant Clarke returns from the war after being injured and their relationship appears to be a close one (he moves into her house). How did he become such a trusted employee? Finally, Clarke’s estranged wife visits Isabel to let him know he is back from the war. Who is she and why does this relationship seemed strained to say the least?
I listened to the Audible version of this story narrated by Julia Eve, which runs 2 1/4 hours long. Her narration was very enjoyable and she really bought the characters to life, using a variety of distinct voices. Despite the unanswered questions I have about the back story, I’m looking forward to listening to other books in the Miss Hewitt Investigates series.
Lots of action packed into 2 hours!
