About this listen

From Sports Illustrated writer Rick Reilly comes this spoof of all things golf and country club.

Missing Links is the story of four middle-class buddies who live outside Boston and play golf together at Ponkaquogue Municipal Golf Links and Deli, not so fondly known as Ponky. An 18-hole garbage dump with hazards that include a concrete river surrounded by a chain-link fence and the pillars of the elevated train that runs through the course, it is reputed to be the worst golf course in America.

One day the group inadvertently discovers that all along they've been playing right next door to the Mayflower Club, a true golfing Eden. The rollicking plot includes a bet to see who will be first to sneak in a round at the Mayflower, as well as the narrator's attempts to reach some sort of reasonable understanding with his overbearing father.

Critic reviews

“[E]asily the wittiest golf novel yet—the Bull Durham of the genre, and the closest thing to Caddyshack on paper we're likely to get.” ( Kirkus Reviews)
"Don't get started reading this book. It will take three burly men to pull you away from it." (Bob Costas, NBC commentator)

wildly entertaining yet extraordinarily heartwarming. I won't forget this book. I've listened to maybe 100 books in the last couple years and I can't think of another one that just brought this combination of cheer and introspection at the same time .

A majority of the book, you are entertained by the story of this group of friends most red blooded American men could only dream of. Then there are moments that just take your breath away. If you have ever golfed, missed friends, appreciated friends, loved a women or seriously contemplated what really matters in life, I recommend this book to you. I'm calling my shot here. You will like this one.

To be honest, I was not a Reilly fan coming into this, but this was very good! Funny and life lessons, just like golf.

Bronson Pinchot gave a great performance!
The storyline was somewhat predictable but still a fun listen. Any lover of the game will appreciate the little nuances and laugh out loud at some of the biting wit of the characters.

This one is a bit crude at times, but that’s part of why it works. I enjoy all of Rick’s work

Any additional comments?

This is a book that will offend some people. Rick Reilly and I are about the same age. We spend time with athletes and are accustomed to locker room humor. I liked this book. Maybe not great literature, but it made my drive more enjoyable and I can't wait for spring so I can go golfing.

I'm a guy. I golf. I liked this book.

I listened to this book with a buddy while driving down and back on a golf trip to Mesquite and Las Vegas Nevada from Utah. As a golf geek with a couple of literature degrees, Rick's book really struck a lot of chords. If your a golf geek with a bit of a brain and a heart, I have a sneaking suspicion this book will resonate with you.

Great writing, great imagery, lots of laughs.

The story and characters had me captivated right from the start. It was one of those stories that you hate to hate to have end.

Couldn't stop listening .
