About this listen
A Discovery of Witches meets The Atlas Six in Modern Divination by Isabel Agajanian, a dark contemporary fantasy from a brilliant new talent. Modern Divination is the first book in the Spells for Life and Death duology.
The colour of magic was gold . . .
Twenty-three-year-old witch Aurelia Schwartz has always had to carefully balance her human life with her secret magical one. With a place at an elite Cambridge University college, she almost has everything she could possibly want within her grasp. Just so long as she follows the rules: make no promises. Tell no one what you are. And never stay the night.
Except Aurelia’s gift of green magic has begun to fade. Worse still, someone is hunting witches – and stealing their powers. Reluctantly, Aurelia needs the help of fellow witch – and dreadfully arrogant classmate – Theodore Ingram. Together, they seek refuge among his family in the remote corners of an already-desolate town. But as she grows closer to Teddy, the power-hungry witch-killer, too, draws nearer. And they threaten to destroy everything Aurelia holds dear . . .
Modern Divination by Isabel Agajanian is a magical cosy fantasy with witches, featuring an academic rivals-to-lovers romance, found family and yearning.
Praise for Modern Divination
‘Lush and atmospheric, full of magic and yearning’ – Olivie Blake, New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six
‘The cosy contemporary fantasy of my dreams’ – Ava Reid, New York Times bestselling author of A Study in Drowning
‘A gem of a book’ – Hannah Whitten, New York Times bestselling author of The Foxglove King

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Story
Compiled by intrepid journalist Neve Pride, this archive of recordings spans the months after dragons emerged on earth, chronicling the communities that sprang up amid the destruction, the scientists, military leaders, and experts searching for a defense, and those steadfastly seeking the missing. Neve and her young daughter Bex travel among the wreckage speaking to those left behind and surviving, against all odds. Neve records everything for history, and in the hopes of locating a clue as to where the dragons came from and how one might stop them.

Scoring a job at the exclusive and secretive Hotel Castle Verna is exactly what I need to pay off my debt and avoid a punishment I might not survive. The guests are a little eccentric, but they are great tippers. All I have to do is ignore the strange sights, smells, and sounds coming from the guest rooms, and I can remain gainfully employed. Simple, right? Except there's one guest at the hotel who's always watching me with his mismatched black and white eyes.

Story
After a decade of bullying me, the Alpha Heir discovers I'm his predestined mate. But just because he rejects me in front of the whole pack doesn't mean he's going to let me go. When I flee my fated mate, he gives chase. The Alpha Heir would sooner murder me than let me live out of his reach. Only death isn't the end for me. The afterlife is a bit more fiery than I pictured, but that's fine. I'm used to fighting to survive, and literal Hell just might be a step up from what I've been dealing with.

It has been so long that I’ve almost forgotten it. I’m too focused on fighting a losing battle to protect my pack. Dr. Emma Fawnsbeck is my last hope, even if she is a human. The surprise is on me when I discover she is my fated mate. She’s too smart, too independent, too…tempting. Now, instead of focusing on the safety and security of my pack, I’m too busy imagining how her lips taste, or what my mark would look like on her neck.

I thought hiring an alien transport to get me off Earth would be the end of my problems, not the start of them. But that’s exactly what happens when my original pilot is a no-show, and the new one considers himself an expert on humans and is more familiar with me than I’d prefer. Hsinth wants something, but I’m not sure that in my pants is it. When our ship crashes in the snow-strewn wasteland of an ancient battleground and pushes my carefully constructed plans off-course, most of my patience goes out the iced-over window.

Let us fly now to the empire of Orrun, where after twenty-four years of peace, Bersun the Brusque must end his reign. In the dizzying heat of mid-summer, seven contenders compete to replace him. They are exceptional warriors, thinkers, strategists—the best of the best. Then one of them is murdered. We know who did it. We saw it happen. No one else did.
