Publisher's summary

Number six in multiple New York Times best seller Larry Correia's Monster Hunter series.

Go big or go home.

When Monster Hunter International's top hunter, Owen Zastava Pitt, was given a tip about some hunters who had gone missing in action, he didn't realize their rescue mission would snowball into the single biggest operation in MHI's history. Their men are being held prisoner in a horrific nightmare dimension, and the only way to reach them is through the radioactive ruins of a monster-infested war zone.

As if that wasn't bad enough, it's also the home base of the powerful creature behind the devastating attacks on the Last Dragon and Copper Lake. It turns out ancient gods of chaos really hate trespassers. But this god picked a fight with the wrong crew, and now MHI wants payback. Calling on their allies, a massive expedition is formed, and with the odds stacked against them, a legion of hunters goes to war.

It's D-Day at the City of Monsters.

A bit of a disappointment

Where to begin...well, in honor of Monster Hunter Seige's release I relistened to the MHI series to refresh my memory, anticipating it would pick up where #4 and 5 left off. I also found out recently that Mr. Correia lost his father.

With the above in mind I wasn't surprised to discover that the focus of #6 was on Owen Pitt's impending paternity and his introspection on how his father raised him. There are some entertaining parts featuring the lively cast of characters in the MHI universe, but there's also a lot of Owen's internal monologing and dialoging about fatherhood, being a father and coming to grips with his childhood opinions of his father.

I'm sad to say there's a lack of balance in Monster Hunter Seige, the adventure is a secondary or even tertiary concern and worst of all, the characters and Owen especially, fail stupid at a number of points in the book. I hate when an author does that. Clues are missed and obvious tells are ignored, making listening a bit of a slog to get through, the eventual outcome being no surprise and the listener left frustrated.

Here's hoping MHI #7 discontinues along this vein and gets back on track with the earlier novels.

Oliver Wyman's narration, per usual, is top notch.

Where is the incredible newbie squad?

I listened to this whole book almost non-stop, but missed Trip and Holly's involvement. A good chunk of the book has them missing without giving any spoilers away.

I still enjoyed the story, which takes you on a roller coaster of emotions. I will even admit to getting a little teary eyed with "the Destroyer's" involvement with Owen. Everyone knew that back story was coming in this book, but wow.

My biggest gripe now is that I have to wait for the next book to be released to find out the conclusion... it's worth the wait though, because I have the rest of the series to RE-read.

Great book and an exciting story.

This is another great MHI novel with everything you would expect and more. If you are a fan of this series, you will love this. If you aren't a fan, listen to the first book and if you still aren't a fan...I can't help you :-)

Still a great series

I've been through this series now just about 5 times and still can't get enough. It's up there with my top 5 favorite series. The cliffhanger left in this particular book was a lot larger than I expected and every time I get to it, I get both frustrated and very very excited for the next book. Oliver Wyman does an excellent job at portraying the emotions of the characters whilst not over exaggerating his voice in such a way as to make it... cheesy.... corny.... anyway he does it right. Larry Correia remains an author to be watched and followed. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more M.H.I.

Keeps you going

Another hit from the series. I really was worried about it with the whole Pit on his own vibe in the book. What I come to love is the diversity of the different characters. They all seem to have something that makes them special and adds to the whole. But this book did not disappoint. It keep me reading (listening) to where I had to put it down because I was rushing through it. Can't wait for the next one. If you love the series this is a must.
