Publisher's summary

Twelve-year-old Montego al'Bou is an orphan, a provincial peasant boy left alone by the recent death of his grandmother. Possessing nothing more than his grandmother's cudgel, he strikes out to the capital where the influential Grappo have offered to bring him up in the luxury of an Ossan guild-family. He finds his welcome frosty, his new home full of confusing responsibilities.

He quickly discovers that the greatest sin in the capital is to be born without money, and the classist elite will not hesitate to remind him of his humble origins. Montego dreams of being his own man, of making it in the cudgeling arenas of the Empire's deadly spectator sport where even a provincial can be worshipped like a god. But skill isn't the only barrier for a wannabe cudgelist. Without allies, cunning, and a helping of daring, he can't hope to make it in the capital.

Great character backstory!!!

Story added depth to an already excellently told tale! Being a large athletic person myself, Montego is in my opinion, by far the most exciting character in the series! Another great story from this brilliant fantasy author.

Great story! Audio issues...

I really liked this story and it's a great insight into Montego as a character. I love the narrator and he does an awesome job. It was difficult to hear simply because of the audio quality. Hopefully that's something that can be fixed.

the champ is here

learning more about the champion known as baby Montego and his origin story along with Kizy and Demere, was awesome. to see him be unsure and lost to the eventual cocksure bruiser who backs down from nothing. won't spoil the first book, in the shadow of lightning. but this was a nice little slice of seeing the rise of the champ!

Great prequel

Audio quality is a little worse on this than the main book, but narrator is great! Cool to see the expanded world.

Fantastic short story

Brian McClellan is quickly becoming my favorite non Sanderson author. I love his worlds and his characters and I just devour every thing he puts out. So much good stuff and this is just more of it!

HORRIBLE Audio!

Have to say that the short story was long on "Cudgeling" and very short on advancing the "glass" concept... however...
Audible is not an immature technology at this point, so there's just no excuse for an audio book to be uploaded with sound quality issues as bad as this. Literally made my teeth buzz a few times due to the heavy bass undertones.

Great origin story.

A well written prequel, that expands the background of the three main characters.
Knowing more about their youth grants a greater appreciation of In the Shadow of Lightning.

Awesome prequel - audio too bassy

Great story of the rise of Montego. Very enjoyable. The audio is a bit too deep in its balance and sounds a bit distorted when you turn it up.
