About this listen

A new space fantasy from Will Wight, the New York Times best-selling author of the Cradle series.

“To survive in this galaxy, you need a wand in one hand and a gun in the other.”

On a little-known planet, Archmage Varic Vallenar casts a grand spell to empower himself with the magical abilities of his alternate selves. The ritual works too well, granting Varic not only the magic but also the memories from six lives.

Including their gruesome deaths.

Now, Varic has power greater than any wizard in galactic history, but he knows that won’t be enough. The enemies he faced in those alternate lives were apocalyptic in scale. Terrors of technology and magic. Nothing that he, or anyone, can defeat.

Sun-eating extra-dimensional insects, shadowy secret organizations, genetically enhanced alien super-soldiers, ruthless megacorporations, and hordes of cyborg undead all lurk in the darkest corners of the galaxy, and Varic knows that any of them can become a world-ending threat at any moment.

All these are beyond any wizard, no matter how many spells he’s mastered or how many interstellar warships he’s rallied to his cause. Hopeless, Varic finds himself trying to preserve what little he can from the coming doom.

Until he hears rumors of a mythical starship, an invincible vessel of heroes made to do battle against galactic threats.

A ship called The Last Horizon.

The Captain is Book One in a planned six-book series.

Dear Listener,

What inspired me to want to tell my story?
"The characters. We’ve got everything and the kitchen sink. The hero is a wizard in a starship who bound the spirit of a planet into his staff. The villain is the central consciousness of a galactic hive mind of cyborg zombies. We’ve got a Jabba the Hutt-style slug-man teaching classes at a magic academy, a super-soldier in power armor who carries a planet-busting weapon, and a mech-summoning knight. The ship’s AI is obsessed with heroic quests and keeps trying to trick characters into adventures. I even had fun with characters who barely show up in the book. One scene ends with a deposed alien queen challenging a defeated soldier to a card game. I had a lot of fun writing this cast, that’s all I’m saying." - Will Wight, writer of The Captain

A fun ride, but lacking in substance.

Honestly, the story itself only deserves three stars but I gave it 4 since I think the author accomplished what he really set out to do.

It's a pulpy roller coaster type of book where all the plot development occurs during conflict and in the form of quips- Hell, It felt like the vast majority of the book was one long battle scene. Starting out on a 9 just doesn't feel very impactful when you can only crank it up to a 10.

This is one of Will's first books that feels solidly YA to me, in nearly every aspect. That's not a negative, its just not what im after these days. Having said that, however, my teenage self would have absolutely loved this book.

I feel it's important to note as well that while this is one of the books that I enjoyed the least by Will
I still had a really great time listening to it. Anytime Will and Travis work together
I'll end up checking it out because the experience is always so much fun.

Great Start!

Seems like it’s going to be a great series!
I’d like to have a bit more information on species but I’m sure Mr.Wright has plans on top of plans

Seems misplaced

This book starts too quickly, forcing us to try to piece together the main character which is not great. Great performance by Travis Baldree

Ok... That was awesome.

I'm a huge fan of the Cradle series, and this new one doesn't disappoint. The Characters start off strong and get stronger. I'm looking forward to the book.

PS... the bloopers at the end are worth the wait.

Will did the impossible (the secret is ab crunches

I didn't think it was possible to 1-up Cradle but somehow Will did it.
Often it is easy to choose a favorite character because one or 2 stand out above the rest. It is neigh impossible to select a favorite because while every single character is relatable but flawed in their own ways; each unique while not being self-insert. basically a masterclass in utilizing character background and development to build a universe.
Tolkien wrote the hobbit because he was annoyed with his son correcting the details of his bedtime stories. I feel Will started this series because he was annoyed with the "sci-fi/fantasy" genre never accurately describing its contents. Sci-fi never really has any fantasy, fantasy never really has sci-fi. This may be the only content I've experienced that is both sci-fi and fantasy (the closest to actually achieving it would be starwars). I feel the captain is going to redefine what it means to be sci-fi/fantasy.

Best bloopers yet!

Will has definitely improved in his ability to write bloopers over the years. Every blooper in here is a work of art and absolutely hilarious. Baldree delivers his consistent high level performance. Oh yeah! The book was really good, too! I already love some of these new characters.
