About this listen

A new space fantasy from Will Wight, the New York Times best-selling author of the Cradle series.

“To survive in this galaxy, you need a wand in one hand and a gun in the other.”

On a little-known planet, Archmage Varic Vallenar casts a grand spell to empower himself with the magical abilities of his alternate selves. The ritual works too well, granting Varic not only the magic but also the memories from six lives.

Including their gruesome deaths.

Now, Varic has power greater than any wizard in galactic history, but he knows that won’t be enough. The enemies he faced in those alternate lives were apocalyptic in scale. Terrors of technology and magic. Nothing that he, or anyone, can defeat.

Sun-eating extra-dimensional insects, shadowy secret organizations, genetically enhanced alien super-soldiers, ruthless megacorporations, and hordes of cyborg undead all lurk in the darkest corners of the galaxy, and Varic knows that any of them can become a world-ending threat at any moment.

All these are beyond any wizard, no matter how many spells he’s mastered or how many interstellar warships he’s rallied to his cause. Hopeless, Varic finds himself trying to preserve what little he can from the coming doom.

Until he hears rumors of a mythical starship, an invincible vessel of heroes made to do battle against galactic threats.

A ship called The Last Horizon.

The Captain is Book One in a planned six-book series.

Interesting. Very interesting.

I finished the book the day it went live but didn’t right a review because I wanted to think about it for a little bit. First great main and supporting cast. Definitely the best first book out of any of Will’s series so far. This was not a Lindon situation where his personality was slowly revealed over the first 1-2 books. You know who the characters are even when you’ve just met them. So great efficient characterization.

My main issue with the book is in Travis’ delivery for the fallen sword. I think it’s just he hasn’t gotten used to the character yet but she sometimes sounds like a normal person and then switches to Texas impression in the next sentence. It was kinda jarring at points. But omega and the iron king were done perfectly. So was Varic and several other characters.

Great foundation!

This is way better than I expected

Honestly I'm typically not a fan of science fiction, but Will Wight nailed this. He's really advanced as an author, and his ability to draw me into the characters are next level. I expected something similar to Traveller's Gate in it's ability to hold my interest, but this might end up being better than Cradle. I am extremely pleased with this storyline. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the series. Travis Baldree as a narrator is indescribable. His voice acting is completely unmatched. He really flexes his abilities in Chapter 24 of the audiobook. When you get there, you'll understand what I mean. imo no other narrator comes close. Will and Travis coming together is a dream come true.

what a great start to a new adventure

I was under the impression that the story was going to be way different and I wasn't nearly excited as I ought to be. that being said the characters are engaging and extremely easy to love. it's an adventure worth writing home about.

Great story and narration

Travis is (once again) the perfect narrator for one of Will’s novels.

The story was a little predictable, but only in the best ways. Usually predictability in stories bothers me. There was enough chaos and misdirections that the few things I could see coming pretty far in advance instead felt rewarding.

Another solid story

Once again, Will Wight has utterly failed to deliver anything less than outstanding excellence as far as an entertaining story is concerned. I loved the premise behind the main character's power and experiencing a fantasy book that takes place in space has been a delightful new experience for me. So if you like Sci-fi or fantasy stories I highly recommend this book!

Full disclaimer, if you're looking for flowery prose on the level of Patrick Rothfuss, you won't find that in Will's books. What he does consistently deliver is engaging characters and a gripping story that won't ever feel like it's a drag.
