Publisher's summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The audiobook of Mort is narrated by the BAFTA award-winning actor Sian Clifford (Fleabag; Vanity Fair; Quiz). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'YOU CANNOT INTERFERE WITH FATE. WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE WHO SHOULD LIVE AND WHO SHOULD DIE?'

Death comes to us all. When he came to Mort, he offered him a job.

Death is the Grim Reaper of the Discworld, a black-robed skeleton with a scythe who ushers souls into the next world. He is also fond of cats and endlessly baffled by humanity. Soon Death is yearning to experience what humanity really has to offer, but to do that, he'll need to hire some help.

It's an offer Mort can't refuse. As Death's apprentice he'll have free board, use of the company horse—and being dead isn't compulsory. It's a dream job—until Mort falls in love with Death's daughter, Ysabell, and discovers that your boss can be a killer on your love life…

The Discworld novels can be enjoyed in any order, but Mort is the first book in the Death series.

The first book in the Discworld series—The Colour of Magic—was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Must listen

The voice acting is great, and actually helpful to the story line. It helps differentiate between Mort and Death and Mort as Death.

The book that started it all - for me

This was the first Pratchett book I read and I fell in love with the Discworld. After reading all the other Death books, the one feels very much like the first one. Pratchett's character and story building evolve so fast and the later books of Death are better, in my opinion. But I still love "Mort," and the production, recording, and voice actors are just incredible.

Death takes an apprentice

and begins his transformation into the true DEATH of the Discworld! I consider Mort the best starting point for new Discworld readers.

An Average Man's Thoughts

Death is one of Pratchett's most fun characters to learn more about and to see in action. The idea of an apprentice for his job is exciting and unique. Mort was able to take that idea, put in a plot that kept me engaged and had me looking for excuses to listen to it. The voice for Death in this series of audio versions is absolute perfection and having a book filled with it was wonderful. Mort helped me reengage with the Discworld after a book that left me a bit bored, this one left me laughing, and listening in awed wonder as the mysteries of how death works on the Discworld unraveled. I very much enjoyed this and would recommend it to anyone.

I love the characters in the Discworld series!

The voice actors do an amazing job with the different voices. They quickly engulf you in the story.

Charming and witty story with great pace

The performance is good throughout (her general narration is really fantastic), but a few character voices she used are far too exaggerated and became grating during my listen.

Pratchett was a funny guy. And the voice actors were fantastic.

The voice actors were incredible. The lady reading the main narrator did a fantastic job creating the voices for the characters and being expressive nonetheless.

AT LAST

I’m so happy this is finally out. The Death series is one of my favorite of the Discworld story lines. Pratchett was the king of being both funny and profound. The voice acting is superb, with the exception of Albert. Clifford’s Albert voice sets my teeth on edge, otherwise her performance is spectacular. Peter Serafinowicz nails Death’s voice and Bill Nighy is perfect for Pratchett’s beloved footnotes. I’m a long time fan of Discworld and think this is a great book for fans and a great place to start for people getting into the series.

audio mastering was the killer

It's truly a timeless story that for some unknown reasons only improves with time.
Superb acting, with fair casting
But sadly, the whole piece was absolutely butchered by sloppy editing and soundmixing
