About this listen

"Narrator Suzy Jackson's assured, brassy tones and forceful delivery are an exceptional match for Sanderson's high-stakes, battle-driven space opera.... Jackson's gift for characterizations shines - she brings out the humor and heroism in Spensa's young classmates and friends (and the neurotic spaceship MBOT), along with the pain and perseverance of the generations that came before them. This is a high-octane futuristic narrative of hope, sacrifice, and courage, and a fast pace speaks to the rising urgency as war rages above the planet. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award." (AudioFile magazine)

From Brandon Sanderson, the number one New York Times best-selling author of the Reckoners series, Words of Radiance, and the internationally best-selling Mistborn series, comes the first book in an epic new series about a girl who dreams of becoming a pilot in a dangerous world at war for humanity's future.

Spensa's world has been under attack for decades. Now pilots are the heroes of what's left of the human race, and becoming one has always been Spensa's dream. Since she was a little girl, she has imagined soaring skyward and proving her bravery. But her fate is intertwined with her father's - a pilot himself who was killed years ago when he abruptly deserted his team, leaving Spensa's chances of attending flight school at slim to none.

No one will let Spensa forget what her father did, yet fate works in mysterious ways. Flight school might be a long shot, but she is determined to fly. And an accidental discovery in a long-forgotten cavern might just provide her with a way to claim the stars.

Yep.

Great story, kept me glued. Ending was a bit weak, but left wide open for a sequel -- I am hoping it gets one.

Wait a bit. It (mostly) gets better.

I gave this book a lot more time than I usually would have, because.... Sanderson. He did not disappoint in the end, at least in plot. He did not follow the obvious pathways, and every time I thought that I knew what path he was on, I was wrong.

I admit that I just turned 40. That said, I love YA fiction in which the main character has decent brains and some concept of manners. I truly hate YA fiction in which the heroine cannot tell rudeness from (take your pick): cleverness, sarcasm, insight, or courage. In this book, it was courage. She eventually learned not to be rude when she was wrong, but she never comprehended rudeness as a fault, and the one character that did was portrayed as fundamentally weak. This book was entertaining, but I would not give it to any young person I know.

Wonderful & Funny

I absolutely love this book, which surprised me given it's not a genre I gravitate towards. The characters in this book were likable and easy to relate to and they were multi dimensional. The plot had lots of twists and turns with an ending that was difficult to guess . The book had a character that was absolutely hilarious and gave the book laugh out loud humour in a very serious novel. I would absolutely recommend this book with no reservations or hesitation.

Amazingly Entertaining

I've read nearly everything that Brandon Sanderson has written. I wasn't really in the mood for a YA title, which is what I assumed this was, but it was the best option in my unread list so I gave it a chance. And then I couldn't put it down. I found myself listening to it far longer than I usually would. I would get to work and keep it playing. I would drive home and keep it playing. Everything Brandon Sanderson writes is fantastic - but this was different. It was laugh out loud funny and smart. It's the best YA that Sanderson has written and I cannot wait for more entries in the series.

Brandon Sanderson you wizard!

I have been hooked into some the best and my favorite books of all time, and I am patiently awaiting the next in the storm light archive, Mr. Sanderson offers an refreshing break into space fighter pilots. This book is fabulous, well written, and a wonderful read/listen. The story has space fights, blasting aliens, saving mankind but also a discovery into the heart of being truly yourself and being free. Thanks for the great book!

Fun story

Story was very well written and entertaining from start to finish. Characters were great and the narration was top notch. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

My favorite Sanderson novel to date.

I feel Skyward is Brandon sanderson's best novel to date. I've loved all of his other works but this one in particular stood out to me. The depth of characters and the logical handling of events and very clear easy-to-follow story arcs really had me hooked like no other. Above all, the ending left me absolutely satisfied. Some of his other works have left me frustrated by a lack power that comes from an excellent resolution at the end of a novel. I'm very much looking forward to the next books.

story aside, this is the best female voice actor I've ever heard and I have more than a hundred novels in my audible Library.

Thank you for creating compelling and gripping stories without the crutch that's so many writers use of intense violence, profanity and sexuality to get the point across. It takes an incredible amount of skill and dedication to not rely on those things to deliver a gripping and Powerful story. I was able to share this book with my eleven-year-old daughter who loved every second of it.

A bit too teen but excellent

Not very deep but excellent narration and Sanderson story telling kept me into it. I was struggling to find something to listen to so I broke down and tried this. I'm not disappointed but it's what I expected... A bit too teen but very good.

Great Book.

My first Sanderson book and blew me away. Beautiful story and writing. It’s a wonderful Sci-Fi story that does a great job building characters and fleshing out a universe that I’m praying we will return to. Very exciting and satisfying listen. Great narration as well. Kudos to all involved!

Sanderson did it again!

Sanderson did it again. This book has action, mystery, a talking spaceship, great character development, and a Doom Slug.
