About this listen

All is far from quiet on the home front in nationally best-selling author Anna Lee Huber's captivating mystery series, in which former Secret Service agent Verity Kent receives a visitor - who is being trailed by a killer....

November 1919. A relaxing few weeks by the seaside with her husband, Sidney, could almost convince Verity Kent that life has returned to the pleasant rhythm of pre-war days. Then Verity's beloved great-aunt Ilse lands on their doorstep. After years in war-ravaged Germany, Ilse has returned to England to repair her fragile health - and to escape trouble. Someone has been sending her anonymous threats, and Verity's Secret Service contacts can only provide unsettling answers.

Even deep in the Yorkshire Dales, where she joins Verity's family for the holidays, Ilse encounters difficulties. Normally peaceful neighbors are hostile, seeking someone to blame for the losses they've endured. When Ilse's maid is found dead, Verity must uncover whether this is anti-German sentiment taken to murderous lengths or whether there is a more personal motive at work. Could Verity's shadowy nemesis, Lord Ardmore, be involved? And if so, how much closer to home will the blow land when he inevitably strikes again?

Best book in series

This book was wonderful, I couldn't stop listening. You have to start with book 1 to understand the story.
It kept me guessing to the end. Can't wait to next book. You won't regret this credit.

After effects of war

Fantastic. Loved the discriminations of the trenches and the country side. I could almost smell the hay barn the discrimination was so vivid …

Good story but

Verity was thinking too much of herself, as if she was the only one who could solve a problem and she had to solve everyones problems. She was very annoying in this book but none the less the writing is good and narrator did a great job. I just could not bear Verity.

Every book gets better

I started and restarted the series. I found that after the second book the story became more interesting. I find the German<>British relationship pair work between individuals well considered throughout and an important perspective in the period novels of this era.

Great and annoying...

I looked at other reviews and agree: Verity's character is most annoying. She's awful smart for 23 due to experience. I tried to attribute her "do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do" attitude to her age, but it seemed to stem more from the entitlement of her class, which makes her whole experience less believable. Five books in, everyone grows, develops or changes... except Verity.

I cried my eyes out

Such raw i emotion. It was immensely satisfying that Verity’s truths were able to be told (well to a certain extent). And the fact that the murderer is never who you think it is, is also a nail biter.

Possibly the best yet.

The excellent narration and complex story compensate for the (relatively few) linguistic anachronisms and Americanisms. The back story is brought forward and in places eclipses the mystery but I found it very hard to stop listening.

character depth

all the mystery twice the character depth. verity is a little bratty but it's worth it. It's a really nice expansion gearing up for the next phase of the story.

another great listen!

I loved this one too! Each mystery is well done and an overarching greater mystery that ties the books together. I love hearing the characters grow and Verity's small changes.

Another good plot

I have read this series from the beginning twice. They are very well written. The unfolding story line of their search for clues to stop her nemesis, Lord Ardmore keeps me reading. Their evolving journey to heal from the horrors they experienced in World War I is eye opening. Keep them coming!
