About this listen

Evie, the Countess of Woodridge, is hosting a house party to celebrate the end of summer. Some of the guests include a famous actress trying to revive her career, a theater critic renowned for his biting reviews, a newspaper owner in need of a scandal, and more than a few guests with motives for murder.

Evie could not have hoped for a livelier group of guests to amuse her granny, Toodles, who has finally arrived for a visit and is eager for some entertainment. However, Evie gets more than she bargained for when one of the guests dies right before their eyes.

What is up with Tom’s accent

The narrator’s attempt at Tom’s Boston accent is so bad. Just do a generic American accent bc whatever this is, it’s NOT WORKING. Which is a shame bc it distracts from a decent story. I’d like to keep listening to this series but that’s impossible if this narrator doesn’t improve. It’s so weird bc she didn’t make Tom sound this bizarre in the first two books. Please just STOP.

Jealousy

Murder and jealousy. Not a good combination. With Toodles now at the manor you never know what will happen. Grandma is not as much trouble as Edie anticipated but rolls with the flow

Enjoyable Read

Joining Evie (Countess of Woodbridge), Tom, and Caro in this outing are "the dowagers," including Evie's American grandmother, Toodles, who has great potential as a recurring character. As much as i enjoy these characters, I thought the story fell a bit short of the entertaining romp i have come to expect in this series. The mystery was good, with a number of suspects, but the reveal seemed a bit rushed, the spark between Evie and Tom was missing, and Caro's usual bossiness was more confrontational than amusing. All in all, I missed the convivial banter that sets this series apart from others. That said, I still recommend the book to readers of the series as a more complete introduction to Toodles and potential foreshadowing of things to come.
