About this listen

Edward O. Wilson - winner of two Pulitzer prizes, champion of biodiversity, and Faculty Emeritus at Harvard University - is arguably one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century.

Yet his celebrated career began not with an elite education but from an insatiable curiosity about the natural world and drive to explore its mysteries. Called "one of the finest scientific memoirs ever written" by the Los Angeles Times, Naturalist is a wise and personal account of Wilson's growth as a scientist and the evolution of the fields he helped define.

At once practical and lyric, Naturalist provides fascinating insights into the making of a scientist, and a valuable look at some of the most thought-provoking ideas of our time. As relevant today as when it was first published 25 years ago, Naturalist is a poignant reminder of the human side of science and an inspiring call to celebrate the little things of the world.

What a life…

Really enjoyed hearing this life story with all the personal and professional joys and disappointments of a man who loved nature. His commitment to study and his travel adventures were amazing. Glad for this closer look at a great scientist’s world.

E.O. Wilson - 20th century Darwin

Wonderful overview of the author’s life in entomology research and teaching.
Grover Gardner, the best narrator ever, brought Wilson’s humanity & love of nature to life.

Worth it

An interesting, well-structured autobiography by an excellent scientist. The reader gets a good idea of what E.O. Wilson was like, what he did and why; somewhat less of the results of his work, probably because he has written about that in numerous other books.

Personally, I hated the narrator's style from start to finish. To me, Grover Gardner intonation is off throughout. Also, he's boring. But seeing the other reviews and the man's experience, I guess it's a matter of taste...

Enjoyed every moment

As an amateur naturalist (ok, I was trained in entomology in college, but I’m merely a dentist now) I loved the way he expressed being moved by nature. I have an active butterfly garden because of him!
