About this listen

Zara White suspects there's a freaky guy semi-stalking her. She's also obsessed with phobias. And it's true, she hasn't exactly been herself since her stepfather died. But exiling her to shivery Maine to live with her grandmother? That seems a bit extreme. The move is supposed to help her stay sane . . . but Zara's pretty sure her mom just can't deal with her right now.

She couldn't be more wrong. Turns out the semi-stalker is not a figment of Zara's overactive imagination. In fact, he's still following her, leaving behind an eerie trail of gold dust. There's something not right - not human - in this sleepy Maine town, and all signs point to Zara.

In this creepy, compelling breakout novel, Carrie Jones delivers romance, suspense, and a creature you never thought you'd have to fear.

Basic plot with interesting characters

*SPOILER FREE*
Don't be fooled, I didn't give this 4 stars because it's an immaculate work of literature. But in the scope of this type of book (2000s paranormal teen romance etc) it's actually a pretty good choice. It's comfortably predictable if you're craving some good old fashioned YA magic creature shenanigans. But if you're at all familiar with this genre you know that the characters tend to be painfully generic. These characters are at least a bit different, there's still that classic dynamic of the cute new girl/mean blond popular girl/quirky instant friends etc but, like I said, it is predictable. But I love that the author threw in a bit of flavor into the characters, especially the MC (since they tend to be the most boring of all). They have interests and hobbies and opinions, which makes this book stand out amongst the litany of these books.

Loved this series!

What did you love best about Need?

The romance. If you liked Twilight you'll love this series.

What did you like best about this story?

You got so into the book you couldn't wait for the next and I was sad when I finished the whole series.

What does Julia Whelan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She had a way to make you feel as if you were in the Fae world yourself.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Totally!!!

Any additional comments?

You don't want the series to ever end!

Brilliant

Quick and fun! Not my typical genre but the story is engaging. Characters are relatable and intriguing. I, especially, enjoyed the grandmother. Writing style is fantastic, I found myself taking mental notes throughout the book on all the clever wordplay. Highly recommend.

Illogical

Zara and her mother did the dumbest things, like the characters in horror movies. Then some of storyline didn't flow & things weren't believable. Clearly, I was not impressed.

I remember reading this book back in 8th grade and it still is a great book now as a 23 year old. It is creative and keeps you on edge.

Recommend. It's a good book

Good book. Great character building. The story is a bit rushed due to the amount of character building.
