Critic reviews

"The book grabs readers by the throat, sets hearts beating loudly and never lets go. The first in a series, it will be all too hard to wait for the next." ( Kirkus Reviews)

Realistic and I love it!

The gritty underbelly of the "real" world is splashed across the listeners imagination in this book of seen and unseen creatures. The reality is so closely linked that you can almost believe the creatures featured here are real. The heroine is completely stripped of protectors and has to fight to learn how to protect herself and those she comes to care for. Wow, what a rollercoaster, this book is non stop action, with a mysterious "what's next" in every chapter. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. Congrats Ms. St. Clair and thank you for bring us such an amazing story. I still have goosebumps

A lot of Fun

No. It's not another Twilight wannabe. It's more like the Supernatural TV show and cross it with Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show and then sprinkle a little Twilight on top. I ended up getting each book in the series. Can't wait for the next one!

Oh...WOW

It started off a little slow, but after hearing the whole story, I could understand why. There are so many parts that made me want to stay "in the light". People who like the "House of Night" or "Twilight" series will be delighted! How do I live until the 29th when the 3rd book comes out?!?

More teenage vampires...

Honestly, I listened to this because the description sounded fluffy and fun, supernatural, but not more of the same old, same old. I was hoping it wouldn't be another vampire book. And it is fun, though angsty, and the mythology takes a few different twists and turns that I really enjoyed, but.... it's basically another vampire book. This one was enjoyable, but I am currently bored of vampire books...

Good book ruined by a bad narrator

I have yet to come across a book with a bad narrator... well until this one... and I was always put off by people knocking a narrator I thought did an okay job. Here, I had to wonder.... who talks like this? (And I specialize in dialects).

I really liked the world Lili St Crow created, but it was horrible mauled by a strange reading from Alyssa Bresnahan. I never have run screaming from a narrator but from this point on if I see she's a narrator I'll probably hesitate to buy the audio version. I enjoy audio- it's the only way I can squeeze in my book addiction these days, and its sad to hear a good book ruined this way. I found myself repeating the things she would say in a normal way. I mean, come on... chase seens shouldn't sound like someone's going to sleep. Bizarre.

As for the story, what I could make of it was a great ride. I would have given it 5 stars if it weren't pushing the language barrier. I don't mind foul language, it made it more real actually (I know teens who cuss and drink like Dru) but I have issues with it being constantly waved in your face in a YOUNG ADULT novel. Just because it's about teens doesn't mean it has to be YA and it would have been rated higher if it weren't filed as young adult. That's why I took a star away... the other went because of narration. I was tempted to rate it with 2 stars but the story does deserve at least 3.

After something like Twilight, it was great to get into some serious action from the start. Again, my version of the story is distorted by the way it was read to me, but I could tell that underneath, the story could be good... I might buy the paper version just to get a decent read.

Quite good

I am a HUGE fan of the author's Dante Valentine series. It's wonderfully dark and creative. I was a little worried that a YA series would be a watered down version of the emotional roller-coaster I enjoyed in her other writing. I was wrong. When you're completely traumatized by the second chapter, you know you're in for a great ride.

The teen voices are good and realistic. The horror, horrific. The story, while a version of similar things out there, does it in a unique enough way to be enjoyable.

Some people are complaining about the performance, but I thought it was great. She is working with what she has. It's possible the cadence of some of the character's speech may not have been suited for reading aloud.

My only real complaint is some of the pacing - the main character spends a lot of time talking to herself in her head, even during action sequences, and that can be annoying/distracting. The same habit makes listening a little awkward because it can be a little confusing what she's said aloud and what she'd said to herself.

Overall, I enjoyed this and will get the second book in the series to see where it goes.
