About this listen

FROM THE BOOKER PRIZE SHORTLISTED AUTHOR OF THIS MOURNABLE BODY, ONE OF THE BBC'S 100 WOMEN FOR 2020

' UNFORGETTABLE' Alice Walker 'THIS IS THE BOOK WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR' Doris Lessing 'A UNIQUE AND VALUABLE BOOK.' Booklist 'AN ABSORBING PAGE-TURNER' Bloomsbury Review 'A MASTERPIECE' Madeleine Thien 'ARRESTING' Kwame Anthony Appiah

Two decades before Zimbabwe would win independence and ended white minority rule, thirteen-year-old Tambudzai Sigauke embarks on her education. On her shoulders rest the economic hopes of her parents, siblings, and extended family, and within her burns the desire for independence. A timeless coming-of-age tale, and a powerful exploration of cultural imperialism, Nervous Conditions charts Tambu's journey to personhood in a nation that is also emerging.

'With its searing observations, devastating exploration of the state of "not being", wicked humour and astonishing immersion into the mind of a young woman growing up and growing old before her time, the novel is a masterpiece.' Madelein Thien

The story was sad and I felt sad for Nyasha especially seeing her wasting away and then the scene with the psychology really angered me. It made me think of how women especially women of color are not taking serious in hospitals and even mocked. The title of the story really fit.

The performance

The fact that the story was fiction but yet still felt so real. I felt as though I have lived the life described. One of my all time favorite books.

Nervous Condition is one of those books that has always been on my book bucket lists. But as a native Zimbabweans i found the narrators accent so contrived and inauthentic i couldnt go far. i guess i will have to buy the book and read it for myself.

Narrator is not it...

And everyday struggle between “who I am” vs “who I ought to be”. But most importantly about how much real estate, gender inequality occupies in everyday conscious and subconscious thought of a an intelligent African young girl.

Performance spectacularly authentic. 🙏🏿✊🏿

Beauty lies in its simplicity. Proud African literary work.

I enjoyed listening to this book, it was easy to follow and as a Venda speaking person it was interesting to pick up so many similarities in the way of life of the Shonas. I could relate and often found myself imagining the set up of the storyline. I highly recommend.

Unfinished | throughly Enjoyed it

Beautiful reading and performance of Dangaremnga’s novel. It took me a little while to get into it but it’s a very insightful and important lens into Zimbabwe in the 1960s, tackling subjects of colonialism, racism and gender through the lives of a Shona family. A novel that leaves you with much to think about.

Highly recommend!

This book is beautifully written, the characters jump of the page. It takes its time peeling the layers of these characters. I’m glad I got to it when I was older, I would have struggled with it when we had to read it in school.

Outstanding
