About this listen

From the bestselling masters of the Old West comes the first in a blazing new series about a young deputy sheriff's coming of age—and trial by gunfire—in a small Texas town. This is the blistering saga of a hero in training, from first blood to final showdown . . .

Flint Moran was fourteen years old when the Civil War ended. He was fifteen when his family bought a plot of land near Tinhorn, Texas. He was barely nineteen when he caught a pair of rustlers stealing cattle—and singlehandedly brought them to justice. How did a teenaged boy track down and capture two hardcase thieves without any help? That's what Tinhorn sheriff Buck Jackson wants to know. He can't help but be impressed by Flint's sharp eye and natural talent with a Henry rifle. So he offers to deputize the boy—tin badge, Colt Frontier Six-Shooter, and all—and Flint happily accepts. But there are things the young deputy doesn't know. And what he doesn't know could kill him . . .

There's a gunman coming to town. A showdown is brewing that could prove to be Flint's first—and possibly last—test. But either way, there will be blood . . .

This is one of the best new books I've listened to in a while. I liked the storyline. It was good from the very beginning. This is the first book in this series. I hope there's more to come. I'll follow this series. I figured it would take a while to build up to the exciting part but it started out exciting. Starting out Flint catches a couple of guys stealing two cows. He makes a citizen arrest. Buck( The sheriff) offers him a job. Flint has special skills. He's an excellent shot also he can track and get results. They escape jail he goes after them catches them and so on. This book is well worth a credit or buying. There is an exciting ending. This is a great book. Jon Waters did an excellent job narrating this book. If my review is any help will you please click on the helpful link below. Thank you.

Does anyone audition these narrators? Our hero may be young, but I think his voice has changed by the time he becomes a Deputy Sheriff.

Narrator leaves a lot to be desired

I think if I would have read the book I would have liked it a lot more. The story was good but the narration was distracting. The main character sounds younger than my 14-year-old and every woman has the same drawl that sounds stuffy and pretentious.

Good story, not great narration

Narrator ruined the story bad choice nothing more needs to be said just a pity after all your work to write

Narrator was poor Don’t use him again

These Johnstone books can be really hit or miss. This one was a miss. The character interaction and dialogue was incredibly detailed but for almost no reason. This story has very few action scenes and is only mildly gripping. I found the main character very cheesy

nothing special
