Publisher's summary

A Civil War-era historical novel featuring the first female agents in the Pinkerton National Police Agency, who work to foil an assassination attempt on President Lincoln’s life.

The year is 1861, the eve of Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration. For Kate Warn, the first female private detective in American history, the only assignment tougher than exposing a conspiracy to assassinate the new president is training her new mentee, Hattie MacLaughlin, in the art of detection. The two women’s mission to save the president takes them from the granges of rural Maryland to the heart of secessionist high society, and sets them on a collision course that could alter the course of history. When Kate’s cover is blown, Hattie must choose between saving her new friend, and her country. Based on a true story.

Dear Listener,

What inspired me to write this story, and when or how did I know it was a novel rather than a comic?
"The spark for Never Sleep came from a graphic novel I was working on, where I learned about the so-called Baltimore Plot, an attempt by Confederate sympathizers to assassinate Abraham Lincoln as he was traveling by train to Washington for inauguration. And who was hired to stop it? Kate Warne, the first female private detective in American history. I wondered what sort of person could have the mental toughness to make it in such a relentlessly male profession so early on. Then, into her life walks the second female private detective in American history—Hattie, this wide-eyed innocent. At first, Kate is annoyed, maybe even a little threatened by this younger woman. They clash, they bond, but, ultimately, they have to work together to survive this extremely dangerous undercover operation. It was a story I couldn’t resist.
I knew immediately that this had to be a prose novel, not a comic, because it’s all told cutting between Kate and Hattie’s very, very different points of view. Really getting into someone’s head like you’re thinking their thoughts, that’s where novels shine, and when you hear Lisa Flanagan bringing these two women to life, I hope you’ll agree." - Fred Van Lente, writer of Never Sleep

Never Sleep

This is a great story. Kate Warn and Hattie are trying to keep the president from being killed. I like books about Kate Warn and this one did not disappoint. There is a good story line and it kept me interested. Lisa Flanagan did a great job narrating this book. If my review is any help will you please click on the helpful link below. Thank you.
