About this listen

It's going to be a long, hard, cruel winter. And there couldn't be a worse place to spend it than up on Anglezarke.

Thomas Ward is the apprentice for the local Spook, who captures witches and drives away ghosts. As the weather gets colder and the nights draw in, the Spook receives an unexpected visitor. Tom doesn't know who the stranger is or what he wants, but the Spook suddenly decides it's time to travel to his winter house, Anglezarke. Tom has heard it will be a bleak, forbidding place, and that menacing creatures are starting to stir somewhere on the moors nearby.

Can anything prepare Tom for what he finds there? What if the rumors about the evil beast called the Golgoth are true? And how much danger will Tom be in if the secrets the Spook has been trying to hide from the world are revealed?

Steven King for young adults

Joseph Delaney's work so far is getting better and better with each book. His stories are well written and the plot will keep you guessing till the end. The idea of having the story told by his young apprentice makes for an interesting view point. i.e. he makes mistakes and must find his own way out. Recommend also Garth Nix, and Jasper Fforde.

Holds my Curiosity

I am not sure if it is the narration but I am drawn to the story. I want to know more. I like the characters even though none are particularly interesting. It kind of reminds me of Harry Potter and the dementors. The world has a darkness to it and some.ofnthe creaturs do too. They have a sadness to them as well. There is an innocence in the Apprentice which is very Harry Potter like. The Spook is a mix; Professor Snape like, a little dark and curmudgeon, yet, kinda like Dumbledore, where he serves as a semi vauge mentor. The world is not as interesting or as imaginative. I want to know more. What will happen to the Spook and to the Apprentice.

Great light fantasy

Narrated well, this story isn't going to challenge you intellectually, but it has solid lore and a storyline that is somewhat predictable, but entertaining nonetheless.

Engaging and scary

I really enjoy all of the Last Apprentice recordings. The narrator is fantastic and you can really tell the difference between each of his characters.

Night of the Soul Stealer

I don’t have a favorite in this series they are amazing but this is definitely in my top 3. Tom is faced with some genuinely frightening challenges. His faith in Gregory is shaken. Excellent book. 10/10
