About this listen

Stevie Bell solved the case of Truly Devious, and now she’s taking her detecting skills abroad when she becomes embroiled in a mystery from 1990s England. Another pulse-pounding and laugh-out-loud stand-alone mystery from New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson.

Senior year at Ellingham Academy for Stevie Bell isn’t going well. Her boyfriend, David, is studying in London. Her friends are obsessed with college applications. With the cold case of the century solved, Stevie is adrift. There is nothing to distract her from the questions pinging around her brain—questions about college, love, and life in general.

Relief comes when David invites Stevie and her friends to join him for study abroad, and his new friend Izzy introduces her to a double-murder cold case. In 1995, nine friends from Cambridge University went to a country house and played a drunken game of hide-and-seek. Two were found in the woodshed the next day, murdered with an ax.

The case was assumed to be a burglary gone wrong, but one of the remaining seven saw something she can’t explain. This was no break-in. Someone’s lying about what happened in the woodshed.

Seven suspects. Two murders. One killer still playing a deadly game.

Great book, audible shouldn’t force written reviews

This is an easy read, quite the page turner. I was completely engrossed in the story from page 1, as I have been with this entire series. If you like a mystery, Agatha Christie style? You’ve found a modern day Christie for Christmas. I’ll be buying several sets for gifts. Happy Reading/listening.

Great book! Wonderful series.

Strong compelling characters, as usual. I really enjoy these books. Meh resolution of the mystery. Total shortcut to wrap it up. But good overall. I hope there are more in the series.

Great characters, great location,meh resolution

I will say that I usually like the narrator for this series, and she does a good job with the original main characters, but I really wish they had added a British narrator to do the British voices, because her British, Scottish, and Irish accents were abysmal! I still really enjoyed the book, although I think the mystery didn’t make a lot of sense in terms of motivations and unexplained actions, but Johnson is a gifted writer, who always keeps you intrigued and entertained, and she also is good with characterization and descriptive language. Overall, another fun ride.

Fun, per usual

Story was not as good as the other books, I found it harder to get into and a little harder to follow.
Overall, still entertaining!

Very enjoyable but one nit-pick. Why would a British student blindly follow an emotionally immature young American’s lead? Yes, at the very end Miss British says that Miss USA’s extraordinary intelligence has been sung from the mountain tops, but if that was truly the reason, you would think it would come up earlier.

Very enjoyable

I will say that this isn't my favorite book of the series so far and does feel slightly disjointed from the rest of the "Truly Devious" series. The build up is very slow in this installment and it takes a long time for the action to get going in both sections. I didn't necessarily mind that as I was enjoying both Stevie's timeline and the flashback sections, but this book did feel a bit long because of that.

I loved all of the London landmarks and English feel of the book as Stevie and crew were touring around London. It reminded me heavily of my own trip to London, having fish and chips and touring the Tower of London. That being said, while it was nice getting a change of scenery, I found myself wishing for more Ellingham Academy.

Stevie and her friends, especially Nate, are always the highlight of these books and especially this one. Stevie's friendships are just so supportive and wholesome and I loved them. We also got the most perfect moment with Nate in this book. It was worth the read just for that.

Overall, I'm still invested in this series, and while some installments are better than others,
the mysteries are always interesting. I'll be eagerly awaiting book 6.

Felt a Bit Long...
