About this listen

From legal expert and veteran author Bryan Garner comes a unique, intimate, and compelling memoir of his friendship with the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

For almost 30 years, Antonin Scalia was arguably the most influential and controversial Justice on the United States Supreme Court. His dynamic and witty writing devoted to the Constitution has influenced an entire generation of judges. Based on his reputation for using scathing language to criticize liberal court decisions, many people presumed Scalia to be gruff and irascible. But to those who knew him as "Nino", he was characterized by his warmth, charm, devotion, fierce intelligence, and loyalty.

Bryan Garner's friendship with Justice Scalia was instigated by celebrated writer David Foster Wallace and strengthened over their shared love of language. Despite their differing viewpoints on everything from gun control to the use of contractions, their literary and personal relationship flourished. Justice Scalia even officiated at Garner's wedding. In this humorous, touching, and surprisingly action-packed memoir, Garner gives a firsthand insight into the mind, habits, and faith of one of the most famous and misunderstood judges in the world.

A great insight.

I’m not going to pretend I’m a snoot, please forgive me, Mr. Garner.

This audiobook was a fantastic window into the life’s of these two amazing men. I have gained a new respect for the Justice, and for Mr. Garner.

I found myself looking forward to my 1-hour commute to work everyday to listen to this book. I just didn’t want it to end.

The narrator did a fantastic job at catching the emotion and tone of the conversations. One would think that Garner was there when it was recorded.

Great flow

Interesting friendship, although it seems Scalia often looked at Bryan as a colleague more than a friend. Excellent narration

Excellent Book!

Well written and well read (at 1.2 times normal speed). I look forward to reading (more likely listening to) their co-authored books.

An awesome look into the “Man under the Black Robe”

I found myself captivated by this book and it inspired me to pursue my own interest in our Constitution, the Federalist Papers, and History of the United States, once again. I was set to go to Law School back in 1986, after earning my B.B.A. In Finance and Accounting. I was going to do the Joint MBA/Juris Doctorate program. I was an older college student and was married after my Freshman year. Needless to say, Make plans for yourself, and God will show his. We had our first child during our Junior year and after taking 5 years to complete our undergraduate degrees, we had accumulated enough student loan debt that I would have to postpone my dream of attending Law School. Now that I am 60 years old, it is the SECOND biggest regret of my life. I believe that I would have made an excellent Attorney and Judge had I made my dream a reality. I take comfort in knowing that the Good Lord has used me for His purposes not my own. AMEN!!! As me for me NOW, I am back off to the Law Library where they know me by my NAME and my big SMILE.

touching and interesting

I really like this book. I didn't know about Justice Scalia before. I am not an American, but love it's history and culture. This book was sweet and interesting. Though at times, it seemed like the author went too much out of his way to prove his close friendship with Justice Scalia. Thank you

Captivating

Bryan Garner is a legal expert and legal author. It was their mutual interest in lexicology that brought about their long friendship. The book is Garner’s memoir of the friendship between himself Antonin Scalia (1936-2016).

The book is well written. The prose is great as is the wit. Garner provides some first-hand insight into the mind and habits of Scalia. He also shows the humorous side of Scalia, as well as his quick temper. The book is a delight to read and provides some good laughs. I most enjoyed the section about how he and Scalia worked together writing books. He covered this in complete detail including arguments they had about grammar. I learned some key points in the discussion they had about textualism while writing their second book. I may not have agreed with all of Scalia’s viewpoints, but I do find him to be a complex and fascinating man and am eager to learn more about him.

The book is fifteen hours and eight minutes. David Colacci does an excellent job narrating the book. Colacci is an actor and award-winning audiobook narrator. He is one of my favorite narrators.

Exceptional

Mr. Garner has written a true masterpiece of friendship.
His ability as a writer

tells a touching tale of two equals in friendship and describes the wonderful collaboration that occurs when competitive allies play to each other's strengths and the whole is greater than the parts. There is no greater honor than to be acknowledged as a friend.

A Must Read!

Garner’s unique insight and personal stories are as interesting as they are hilarious. Owed largely to his fiery dissents, Scalia has always been a mythical (and largely misunderstood) individual in both the Judiciary and the federal government as a whole. Garner dispels those myths, revealing a side of Scalia most of us never witnessed, and he does so in ‘can’t put it down’ type of way. A+!

We need more of Bryan Garner's books on Audible!

Outstanding book. By the end I was invested in both of the main characters, and felt like I was along for the ride for this personal journey with Justice Scalia. Obviously very well written, as one would expect from a Snoot like Mr. Garner.
