About this listen

There is but one aim: the summit, the summit of Mount Everest.

What starts with a trouble-free trek into the Nepalese highlands explodes into a gripping tale of hardship, peril, and adversity. Pushed beyond their physical and mental limits, climbers drop by the wayside. Their primal instincts for survival battle with their dogged resolve to drag themselves to the top of the world. But the focus remains: battle to the summit, and if successful, somehow get back down again.

White plunges the listener into a land of subzero temperatures, asphyxiating air, and ever-increasing danger. Base Camp and the Himalayan world above it come to life in this riveting, true novel. The inner workings of an Everest expedition team and what it takes to climb the world's highest mountain are laid bare. Some return from the death zone injured. Some do not return at all.

Success and failure vie for supremacy throughout.

This personal, day-by-day chronicle takes the listener along every step of an Everest climb. A must for climbing enthusiasts, lovers of adventure, and extreme sport junkies; the closing chapters will leave you breathless.

Excellent honest portrayal of a difficult climb

My son and I recently returned from a trek to Nepal to Everest base camp and subsequent climbing of nearby Island Peak.
Mr White’s description of his experience closely tracked ours for the trek up to base camp. I was therefore confident of the authenticity of his recounting of the Everest climb and its travails.
I appreciated his unvarnished account and his musing about the ambiguity of his accomplishment.

Wow! Read this before you yearn for Everest.

I’ve never thought climbing Everest looked appealing. This book tells in depth how it feels to do it. Painful, scary, stressful, hunger, thirst, and the list goes on. A great book and very different from other climbing books.

Riveting

Learned a lot from this book beyond any documentaries I've ever read or watched about climbing Mt. Everest. I couldn't put it down. The details were exceptional as was the narrator.

Couldn’t put it down

This book was a joy to listen to. The writing style, wit and reality made me hinge on every word. This is a must read if you want a real account of the emotions, physical demands, and drive needed to summit Everest.

Thrills, spills and chills

Very honest look at climbing Everest-which is not always romantic. Great detail. I have plans to listen to it again.

An adventure you can relate to

I've read this book three times and always recommend it to people but this was my first time listening to it as an Audiobook. I was somewhat nervous in that one of the qualities of the non-audio book is its 'authentic' voice. The Audiobook delighted me as the accent is Irish and completely fits the style of the book. It's perfect for a commute or long journey.

If you haven't read the book: it's an account of a non-mountaineer who decided to tackle the world's highest mountain and the joy of the book is the way it bring the physical and mental journey to life in a way that you can relate to it. It moves at pace and feels likely a really honest account of the experience. I'm sure it'll inspire you to take on (a possibly smaller!) adventure of your own.

Excellent Story But Skipped Many Chapters

Ascent into Hell is an enjoyable Everest summit chronicle by Fergus White. Fergus is down-to-earth, friendly, humble and honest. He writes about Everest without the tattletale gossip of Into Thin Air and provides step-by-step details of his Everest summit from an amateur's perspective.

Fergus' accounting does become repetitive after a while (it's a long process to get acclimated to environment), so I skipped a number of chapters in the second half to get to the summit push, climax, descent and epilogue. The first half of the book sets the stage and the pace very well, so I did not feel like anything was lost skipping ahead.

This was my third Everest story, (1) The Climb (highly recommended), (2) Into Thin Air (did not like the gossip and judgmental writing) and (3) Ascent Into Hell (interesting, thoughtful, honest). Of all the protagonists in these stories, Fergus comes across as "a very good hearted person" and I'm very glad he reached the summit and returned without losing any toes or fingers. He was very lucky but also showed great judgement, team spirit, and overall courage. Fergus deserves his place in summit history.

Ascent Into Hell is nicely complimentary to other Everest books out there. Fergus' story is good for anyone who wants an honest step-by-step chronicle of a successful Everest summit.

Congrats Fergus!

Very Detailed

This isn’t another general summary, like most. Each step is explained in detail, at each part of the journey. If this subject matter fascinates you I highly recommend this book. It’s is chock full of detailed stories and descriptions of all the famous places related to climbing the South Side, and how experienced it. Fergus is keen to let the reader know he isn’t some bravado filled super-climber, but a normal guy. You really do feel along for the expedition and get a sense of the danger and the gravity of each situation. The amount of variability and uncertainty when it comes to climbing Everest or any 8000m peak really comes to light when he explains what is plaguing his mind at each step along the journey. Expect tons of detail, not just “we went though the icefall” or “we went from camp 3 to camp 4, it was hard”. Each step, you’re right there. Definitely will be enjoying again.

Jm

Great story and great must listen. Feels like you’re along with them on the journey to the top of the world minus all the training and hard work. Was sad when it was over!
