It is always remarked that O. Henry has a surprise ending. I would not describe the endings as surprising, but the story turns on a dime at the end, in a very satisfying way. He is has a romantic and kind heart. He paints a detailed view of the time, including the prices of food, and the wages of the day, and makes off-hand comments about society.
I liked this author when I was young.
