Short

This appears to be an introduction written after the first book. It's a very quick look into a case that Cal ( once a cop, now a PI) is working on. She has done the footwork but brings in her old police partner to complete it. I enjoyed both story and reader. I look forward to the next book in the series.

California Corwin is an interesting female hard boiled detective.

I’m always looking for mysteries with engaging characters, and I really enjoy getting to know Cal Corwin, the lead character in this series.

The plot development in this short story isn’t as well conceived as in the full length mysteries in the series, but still very enjoyable.

Some readers may find the characters a bit stereotypic and two dimensional- but I appreciate it when the characters in novels don’t behave in ridiculous ways contrary to who the author has created them to be.

This is not Elizabeth George or Tana French, but Off The Leash is nonetheless an enjoyable distraction.

Love this character

D.D. VanDyke has created an appealing first-person narrator expertly performed by the narrator. Actually, the story feels real because of the all the characters and how they're performed, more than the plot. A fun way to spend an hour on the road but probably not worth spending a credit on. Although, there is that narration, LOL. Can't get enough of this narrator reading Cal's thought process but would have liked a longer and more complicated plot. I'm getting ready to listen to the next novel in the series and hoping that it's got more satisfying storyline.
