About this listen

Smarter in 60 minutes.

Oliver Cromwell is one of the most controversial figures in British history. He managed to dethrone the monarchy and serve Britain as its only non-royal lord protector. His unfortunate legacy, however, lies in his cruel treatment of the Irish.

This brief history dives into the many dividing realities of Cromwell's life. It does not discriminate between the good and the bad but rather lays it all out so listeners can see for themselves what they think of this man who, after his funeral, was dug up and hung like a common peasant.

Do not recommend

A cringe-worthy "Christian" version of history, full of American equivocations and teenage-like statements.

"Somebody even dug his body up and..." Could it be King Charles II? Shouldn't they say that?

Cromwell as Lord Protector, "...never bothered anyone." Well then, he was definitely a good guy...

The main complaint about Cromwell, "...because he had to have everything HIS way...." That's a campy way of saying "authoritarianism. "

Regarding Cromwell's Irish campaign, the author says, "The Catholics had long been a thorn in Cromwell's side.." Um... not really, no. Not until the beheading of Charles I.

And "Ireland's Catholicism had long been a point of contention with neighboring countries." Yes, Ireland was always picking battles with invading Protestants...so fussy.

Lastly, the writers strangely vascillate in how they talk about God. They talk about God as if he is an actual supporting character, not a belief from Cromwell's perspective. And then other times they say "his God" awkwardly, like as if someone edited that bit to distance themselves from earlier language.
