About this listen

Oliver Twist sets everything forth in just the title: a twisting and turning of plot events that take the young boy - as well as the listener - on a very emotional journey, from start to finish. The young Oliver is orphaned practically at birth, and when he grows up, he is passed off to several people who simply put him to work without really caring for him. Oliver escapes after being put to work by a coffin-maker, yet his new found freedom leads him right to a few individuals who do not have his best interests in mind. They're so-called friends who take him in, yet they have the intention of priming him to be a pick-pocket. But with each downturn in his life, there is a corresponding up-swing for Oliver.

It's incredible to note that he is such a young age throughout the story, when many of the tasks he faced and overcame were so mature. Despite his tribulations, his run-ins with people who are trying to harm him, and his brief captivity with a band of criminals, Oliver experiences a happy ending after all, which has made all of the journeying and the searching worth it for him.

Mixed feelings about Dickens, Enjoyable but flawed

I enjoy the way Dickens uses language and tells the story, but there are elements that are very hard to tolerate - his depiction of Jews for one, and his theme of biological determinism, a sort of "class will out" approach where an urchin/orphan who comes from a privileged background will resist the corrupting influences of his hard life.

Still Dickens was a force for improvements to the harsh conditions of his time and he does tell an interesting story.

Awesome Narrator!

A wonderful and deeply engaging story with an equally impressive narrator. Ben Lawson is simply outstanding and makes this story come alive. I was not ready for it to end. Now this is the way a story should be read!

Terrible narrator of a great story

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Narrator was awful. This is such a surprise as Audible does such a great job with choosing excellent narrators. This recording got a high rating for some strange reason. The narrator really spoiled a great story. I am tempted to buy another version... I am originally English so I am not put off by an English narrator, just not this guy

Would you be willing to try another one of Benjamin May’s performances?

Absolutely not, a terrible narrator. Rushes the text, makes constant errors and has no narration abilities.
