Publisher's summary

One of Dickens’ earlier works, dating from 1839, this novel charts the fortunes of an honorable young man, Nicholas Nickleby, who has set out to make his way in the world. Dickens presents a remarkably vivid display of Victorian characters and the lives they lead, from the generous to the fated to the crushed. Hope springs eternal, however, and righteous persistence brings rewards.

Great Narration

I’ve always loved this story but David Horovitch’s performance was spectacular. He made each character with its own tone, accent, and nuance so real that I’m left bereft now the book is finished. Dickens wrote a masterpiece and Horovitch brought it to life. Brilliant.

Best narrator I've ever heard

I bought this just because of the narrator. Like watching a play - he brings the story to life so well.

humbled

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I was humbled by the reader's awareness of the piece and his ability to covey it. worth a hundred of my college courses on dickens. dickens ain't too shabby either of course.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ralph. Tho as a kind of caricature of heros, Nick is pretty good too.

What about David Horovitch’s performance did you like?

see above

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

yes and neither. see above.

Any additional comments?

thanks to both my companions of many happy hours.

Best performance ever!!!

It took me a few chapters (6 or 7?) to really enter into this one but it was so very worth the effort. This is a beautiful portrait of all levels of English society of the era. Even after 65 chapters I’m sorry that it’s over. The performance by David Horvitch was the best part and I will certainly look for more books narrated by him. Chapeau!

jumpy and wordy

The narrator did a phenomenal job; differing the voices, tone, and inflection.
The story was a chore

Dickens at his most tedious

If you want to read Nicholas Nickleby, you'd much better stick to print, where the long-winded prose can be skimmed at will. As an audiobook it is a marathon. The novel abounds in bombastic moralism but lacks the wit and drama of Dickens' better works.

David Horovitch's performance is generally excellent, occasionally overplayed (in keeping with the spirit of the writing), but can't redeem the book.
