About this listen

This gripping memoir by the world's foremost marine geologist is an enthralling blend of maritime history, popular science, and Clive Cussler-style adventure.

David L. Mearns has discovered some of the world's most fascinating and elusive shipwrecks. From the mighty battleship HMS Hood, sunk in a pyrrhic duel with the Bismarck, to solving the mystery of HMAS Sydney, to the crumbling wooden skeletons of Vasco da Gama's 16th-century fleet, Mearns has searched for and found dozens of sunken vessels in every ocean of the world.

The Shipwreck Hunter chronicles his most intriguing finds. It describes the extraordinary techniques used, the detailed research, and mid-ocean stamina and courage required to find a wreck thousands of feet beneath the sea, as well as the moving human stories that lie behind each of these oceanic tragedies. Combining the adventuring derring-do of Indiana Jones with the precision of a scientist, The Shipwreck Hunter opens an illuminating porthole into the shadowy depths of the ocean.

Exciting True Sea Stories

This book comprises a set of well told narrations of deep-sea quests to locate famous shipwrecks and discover as much information as possible about the details of the tragic losses. The technology and methods are fascinating. It is also satisfying to learn the details of event that captured the headlines when they occurred.

the shipwreck Hunter

I found this book extremely interesting with the underwater search using cameras and forensics to determine where a shipwreck should be located. some of the wrecks are famous others are infamous and it makes for a very good story and it did keep my attention throughout the book.

For the history & techie shipwreck buff.

Excellent and important history lessons. Very interesting details but a tad too much technical jargon. Still enjoyed this book.

Marvelous! Meticulously written.

Not an adventure story with some swordplay and a dollop of historical fiction tossed in to add some spice. This in a Real Adventure story, The kind we all imagine we would like to live. Except we all know the difficulties and and danger would be overwhelming. Let alone the hours of tedious referencing of documents and anecdotes. This is a scientific journal written for all. Totally captivating.

Interesting story

I keep thinking that at some point the narrator is going to say "I'm Casey Kasem" He sounds just like him.

I originally thought the story would be more about diving and less about side scan sonar but the background story about the wrecks are well written and I find myself being interested in the stories of what you might think would be uninteresting wrecks.

Enjoyable

Compelling and touching personal story. Heavy technical descriptions. This book is not about searching for pirate ships. I liked the forward looking epilogue.

Brings History Alive

Interesting and technical...really a collection of stories with the same theme. well written if a bit narcissistic and sappy.

Too much background given

I did enjoy the story in general, however, there were long stretches of simply discussing background information that I personally found uninteresting.

The technical details of how the searches were made were interesting and the field in general is fascinating.
