About this listen

During his years pastoring an inner-city church, Wendell Mettey discovered that God uses even the most blemished vessels to bring beauty into the world. In On Which Side of the Road Do the Flowers Grow?, Pastor Mettey shares the humorous and touching stories of his diverse congregation - ordinary people whose lives were infused with an awareness of God's real and abundant grace.

Broken Vessels Used By God

A book of real lessons . . . not just the side dishes, but the meat and potatoes of life as a Christian . . . the ONLY thing that could have made the listening better would have been a male narrator, since Pastor Wendell Mettey is a man, not a woman . . . this made it confusing to listen to . . . however, the content is excellent . . . the love and humility with which the stories are written is evident, God's grace obvious . . . people from every walk of life, every ethnic background came to Walnut Hills Baptist Church, each with their own set of peculiarities, their own vices, and their own invisible walls . . . undaunted by what he saw on the outside, Pastor Mettey took each as the broken vessel that we all are, created by a loving God, and loved them individually, waiting for God to reveal who He had created them to be . . . not put off by drunkenness, pride, wealth or poverty, Reverend Mettey and the congregation at Walnut Hills pushed forward, toward the goal, which Christ had put before them . . . Love your neighbor as yourself . . . the story of the lowly water carrier, the analogy which the book is based on, is one that touches me deeply, and one that I had never heard before . . . for my vessel is VERY cracked, and water regularly seeps from it . . . and how I pray that I can leave a few flowers along the path that I leave behind . . .
