King Geek vs the Cheerleader

Julia Farrow has it all. She's got the friends, the grades, the smile, the perfect reputation, and the new boyfriend who adores her. All in all, life is pretty much perfect for Grover High's favorite cheerleader. Until she's tagged, that is. That ridiculous "Geeks Gone Wild" hashtag is still going strong and while Julia has managed to steer clear of the drama unfolding between the jocks and the geeks, one embarrassing photo is enough to flip her world upside down. The boyfriend? He's out. The friends? Turns out they're more like frenemies. And that perfect reputation? Well, that's all about to crumble as the truth comes out about Julia and her secret, passionate love affair with all things comics.

But Julia isn't about to go down without a fight. She's spent a lifetime honing her perfect image and when it's ruined, there's really only one person to blame. The school paper's editor-in-chief and the guy behind the hashtag - Matt Cartwright. Sure, he claims he's innocent, but if it wasn't for him she'd still be on track to be prom queen. He might not be able to fix this disaster that her life has become, but there's one way he can make it up to her. He can bring her along to the comics convention he's assigned to cover for his internship with the local paper. He's got the tickets, she needs an escape, and really, it's the least he can do. She's just tagging along as a fan, that's all. It's not like they have to be friends or anything. And those kisses? Well, what happens at comic-con stays at comic-con...right?

Nothing but the best from Maggie Dallen

I’ll admit it…I’m obsessed with Maggie Dallen. Her ability to write short, engaging, and downright adorable books is cause for some serious spotlight. I love not only this book but every single book of hers I’ve listened too so far. The narration was spot on to so cheers to Lauren Fortgang and Josh Hurly for their hard work. I’ve also had the privilege to listen to another book narrated Lauren narrated called Kill the Queen (written by Jennifer Estep) which I also recommend. I have yet to read the first two books in the Geeks Gone Wild series and I look forward to listening to them soon!

Fun read

I really enjoyed this story. It is lighthearted for the most part, it does deal with mean girls and little bullying. I loved getting to see this other side to Julia. We met her in the previous 2 books in the series though you don’t have to read them to fully enjoy this one. I loved getting to see this “geeky” side to her. It was interesting to see Matt having to change some of his perceptions of people and what they could be. I did get Matt not liking the facade that Julia put up, he wanted her to be genuine, whatever that looked like. The narrators did a great job with the story and really showcased the emotions in their voices. It was great.

Fun wrap up of the series!

Maggie Dallen's take on the YA high school clique stereotypes is always entertaining & this one is the best of this series.

Matt's nerdy, John Waters earnestness is so sympathetic that it's hard to be overly annoyed with him for the stupid #geeksgonewild fiasco (though I could well understand Margo taking longer to get there).

And Julia was especially interesting in that she was more than her good girl-head cheerleader stereotype so I was initially puzzled by all the angst over her picture (esp since comic cons are more trendy than anything these days), as even she recognized the politics of her situation would swing back in her favor eventually, but her reason was a refreshing surprise. Her "unmasking" was even better.

I loved the way they reconciled and the epilogue was great. Can't wait to see what Maggie Dallen comes up with next!

*Clean romance level: passionate kissing

[The 2 narrators, alternating as the hero and heroine's narrative voices for their respective chapters, do a great job making the reading sound natural and distinguishing the various characters' voices for listeners]

Be True to Yourself

Title: Once Upon a Comic-Con
Author: Maggie Dallen
Format: Audio
Narrators: Lauren Fortgang and Josh Hurley
Genre: YA Romance
Standalone: Yes
Part of a Series: Yes Book of the Geeks Gone Wild Series
POV: Matt and Julia
Steam Level: Clean, just kissing
5/5

Once Upon a Comic-Con is the last book in the Geeks Gone Wild. In it Maggie Dallan did a great job in catching new readers up to the series' events and the infamous photo that started it all. What I liked best about this book was the look at how you portray yourself to others and the disconnect between your true self and your outward appearance. Of the entire series, Once Upon a Comic-Con does this the best because experience Julies's fall from grace rather than already not being popular and being used to being made fun of. This is a great series for reminding people of how you treat people matters and choosing friends to who build you up, not tear you down.

I received this book for free from Audiobook Obsession. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Great story

Matt is part of the geek squad who is tired of the popular kids labeling him and his friends. He takes pictures of his friends at a party and has the pictures added to the end of a slideshow with the hashtag #geeksgonewild. The reaction to the pictures got out of control and soon other pictures had the same hashtag. Julia is the head cheerleader and one of the most popular girls in school. Her boyfriend Ryan is a football player and also in her friend group. A picture of Julia starts circulating around school and soon she is being ignored by her friends and Ryan breaks up with her. Julia is asked to go to a Comic Con Convention by Matt. While they are there, Matt and Julia get to know each other and find that they have a connection. They both know that on Monday they will be back to school and they have to decide if what they have together is strong enough to withstand the scrutiny of their friends. I really liked these characters and enjoyed watching them figure out what is important and what’s worth fighting for.
Lauren Fortgang and Josh Hurley are new narrators to me and were perfect as Julia and Matt. They were quickly added to my list of favorites.
