About this listen

Halliday Valentine here!

It's a week before Christmas, and my quaint holiday town, Marshmallow Hollow, is chock-a-block with seasonal activities. Some less fun than others...like the ice sculpting competition my bestie, Stiles, has talked me into. Let's just say, as a pair, Michelangelo we ain't. I'm secretly relieved when our epically awful ice display gets damaged. It gives me a chance to watch my new beau, Hobbs, compete in the sled race.

But not five seconds in, and Hobbs' sled-loving dog, Stephen King, escapes my grip to get in on the action - and boy, does he. He even manages to find himself a sled to ride. Too bad it's already occupied. With the corpse of a renowned ice sculpting judge.

True-crime lovers that we are, Hobbs and I jump right into the investigation. It's not nosiness, I swear. A little kitten's fate is on the line, after all (long story)!

Only problem? A bajillion suspects. The victim was nothing if not an equal-opportunity jerk, universally hated by everyone he'd ever met. And every suspect has an air-tight alibi. Not to mention, the murder weapon is a giant mystery the police can't solve.

I'm loving the way the story is developing! This is my 2nd favorite series from Dakota, with the potential to move into first. (But it will be hard to beat the ladies of OOPS...)

Continued Christmas Cozy Quality

This is my first Dakota Cassidy series and I flew through the three volumes available (at the time of this review) in as many days. I am really enjoying this paranormal cozy with a cast of colorful characters, slow burn romance, and magic sprinkled throughout. The pacing feels leisurely allowing the audience to take in the players of this tale while deepening their connection with the already established characters. I love to see the evolution of the protagonist Hal's relationships as well as her connection to her magic abilities. The natural way Halliday uses her gifts is very well written and makes the world feel more immersive. The humor throughout is a light touch and not heavy handed I'm a super sassy leading lady style, these feel like conversations I would have with friends. The mystery is engaging and the narration helps to evoke emotions in the appropriate times. It is funny to admit these stories continue to make me feel the tension of danger even though part of me knows there will always be a happily ever after by the end. The romance between Hal and Hobbs is sweet and endearing not heart racing love at first sight. There is a believable admiration and friendship that seems to underly their dynamic that I enjoy. I continue to be impressed by how drawn in I am and how excited I am to listen to new volumes. After my enjoyment of this series I am definitely planning to check out Cassidy's other books.
