About this listen

What happens when you swap 'I do' for pastures new?

When 23-year-old shepherdess Emma Gray breaks off her engagement, the chance to take over an isolated Northumberland farm seems just the fresh start she needs. But while the beautiful scenery certainly offers plenty of scope for contemplation, a night out with an eligible bachelor soon seems more remote than the farm itself. And once you add fugitive sheep and freak blizzards into the mix, Emma's dreams of a happy future at Fallowlees Farm quickly begin to fade.

Throughout the long nights of lambing, the highs and lows of the local sheepdog trials and the day-to-day chores of maintaining a large, ramshackle farm, Emma's collies are her most loyal companions. With Bill, Fly, Roy and Alfie by her side, she'll never really be alone.

Emma's remarkable first year at Fallowlees - the triumphs, the disasters, the heartbreak and the glimmer of romance on the horizon - is an inspiration for anyone who has ever dreamt of changing their life and starting all over again.

I first heard of Emma Gray while watching This Farming Life. I was curious when I found that she had written a couple of books as well.
This book is refreshing, telling everyday stories in a way that warms your heart. It has fast become one of my go to books/ audiobook when I want something upbeat. I also am completely comfortable having it on in the background while my toddler is around, which I’ve realized isn’t true with some of my other favorites.
I genuinely hope she writes more!

I love little books like this one. They are worth the money for hours of gentle happy description of, well, life. I loved the tales about the dogs but my heart is still broken about Emma’s need to sell the dog Fly, I believe, to pay the Fly’s awful but necessary vet bills. Too bad Emma couldn’t have done a “Go Fund Me” page to get the money so she could keep her special pooch AND pay the courageous and hardworking vet. This was a book worth reading and a homey description that made this bed-bound person day dream for a long time about living the life of a shepherdess who enjoys a big sky, wonderful and talented dogs, a fabulous farmhouse, adventures of lambing season, sheep trials, friends and loved ones. It’s a nice read.

Great little book.
