About this listen

When his picture appeared on the cover of Texas Monthly, Joaquin Jackson became the icon of the modern Texas Rangers. Nick Nolte modeled his character on him in the movie Extreme Prejudice. Jackson even had a speaking part of his own in The Good Old Boys with Tommy Lee Jones. But the role that Jackson has always played the best is that of the man who wears the silver badge cut from a Mexican cinco peso coin, a working Texas Ranger.

Legend says that one Ranger is all it takes to put down lawlessness and restore the peace: one riot, one Ranger. In this adventure-filled memoir, Joaquin Jackson recalls what it was like to be the Ranger who responded when riots threatened, violence erupted, and criminals needed to be brought to justice across a wide swath of the Texas-Mexico border from 1966 to 1993.

Critic reviews

"Joaquin Jackson's frank and colorful account of his long career as a modern-day Texas Ranger thrills like an action novel....I could hardly put the book down....The writing is superb." (Elmer Kelton, award-winning author of The Good Old Boys)

One hell of a book that leaves you wanting to hear more of his stories; being from Texas I have visited many of the areas he mentions in his book. I found myself engulfed with his adventures. Last spring we drove out to west Texas to enjoy the flowing colors of the rugged area. Not knowing the content of this new book beforehand, I downloaded the book. Not only did I enjoy listing to the adventures of Ranger Jackson, but our entire group wanted to hear him tell his true life stories as we drove back to Houston. The stories are true and the ending is sad. I found myself wanting to hear more of the life and times of Ranger Jackson. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what it is like to be a Texas Ranger.

Articulate writer, excellent reader! held my attention throughout. Satisfying description of a life in service as a lawman...warts and all. The expressive descriptions of events and people...not to mention the Texas way of speaking so very enjoyable!

Well written!

wish someone, anyone, would have taught the narrator the proper pronunciation of Sabinal Texas. Sa-Ben-AL not Su bine el as he REPEATEDLY says. Great book liked the chapter about Johnny Rodriguez, my mother's family who still live in Sabinal don't speak as fondly of him, but he did steal our goat.

3rd time going through this book, great story.

What a story of service and humility and honor and decency - and of pain. A man from an age that, sadly, is mostly in the past.

Historical, humorous, humanity at it’s worst and best.
Whatever one finds interesting will find it in, “One Ranger.” Rex Linn read with an excellent Texan & Tejano accent. Although, the RR twenty-two, twenty-two was a bit of the motorcycle drive was hysterical.

Excellent

This is a great book. Rex Linn captures the spirit of Joaquin Jackson in his reading of the book, better than any narrator I have heard. The rangers do not have a perfect history because of the times, political pressures, and the fact that for much of their history, their training was sparse and the landscape was brutal. We get to know a lot of the heart of this one ranger. He was a man's man who did the best to do his duty. Great Read.

A well balanced tale that brings insight into the life of the archetypal Texas Ranger. I love this book. Rex Linn’s voice is perfect. Jackson writes with wit and wisdom that covers the multifaceted history of the Rangers warts and all. You can never doubt the devotion this man had to the Rangers, his duty and the state of Texas.

Written with humor, heartache and honor
