Publisher's summary

In the best-selling tradition of Rescuing Sprite comes the story of a puppy brought back from the brink of death, and the family he adopted.

In 2002 Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen - one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue - ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy's charms, and decided to take him home.

Heartwarming and redemptive, Oogy is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him "Oogy" (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own.

More Family than Dog

Would you listen to Oogy again? Why?

Yes! It was a really great story! One that makes you want to run out and rescue/help as many animals as you can, or just go home and grab yours up - squeeze and smother them with Kisses!!!!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Oogy?

When they took the cat to have her put to sleep, and found Oogy on the way out!!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I almost cried several times.

Any additional comments?

I thought this was a really great listen!
It seemed to be as much/more about the family that loved him as it was about Oogy! I still came away feeling like I new Oogy.

Lovely story

I love dog books. This book was written by a friend of mine (full disclosure) and I was eager to download it. The story is wonderful--Oogy is a remarkable dog, and the family that adopts him is special as well. The author tells the whole story very well, but the narrator bothered me the whole book long. His voice was just wrong for me. That may not be so for others, so please don't let that stop you from listening to a heart-warming dog tale.

Oogy: The dog everyone will love

This is a sweet story full of antropomorphisms but if you're a dog lover you probably won't care about that, I didn't! I listened to this book in two sessions. I like Joe Barrett's voice it is kind and gentle and I felt fitted the story well.

Amazing

Oogy is an inspirational story. My whole life I have wanted to save a dog’s life as Larry Levin has. This story makes me appreciate the people who are willing to put their own lives to the side to help another life. I just wish everyone was like this, willing to help, save, and give. If you listen to this book your heart will melt. Oogy and Larry are both soooo inspiring and kind that you will want to do what they did, love and rescue. No matter what breed, or what everyone says about a certain type of dog, all of them need a second chance. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone you know. It has changed the way I look at dogs. People hurt and kill them just to make money. I am so sad that it is over. I want a part 2!🐶 Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely, for that one dog the world will change forever.

Really enjoyed this heartfelt story

Would you consider the audio edition of Oogy to be better than the print version?

Yes, at the time I listened to this we were traveling and it was so relaxing to ride alongand look at the scenery and listen to a good story.

What other book might you compare Oogy to and why?

I also listened to Huck and not that it was sad just that it was a great animal story.

Have you listened to any of Joe Barrett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no, I havev't

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Oogy was but not Huck

Any additional comments?

Nothing more than I love animal stories.

Tugs at the heartstrings...

Sweet story of a battered dog and a loving family who took him in. Used as a bait dog due to his loveable nature, Oogy was left to die. A determined vet and a caring family has made this special dog's life wonderful. The story also gives ia small glimpse into the world of dogfighting. Dogs are housed at abandoned properties and rotated so they cannot be linked to any owner. People who fight dogs will look for bait dogs on Craig's list or other forms of advertising, targeting the "free to good home" listings. ( I found this enlightening.)

Oogy, however is not a sad story but one of overcoming obstacles and rescue. I would thoroughly recommend this tale (no pun) if you need encouragement.
