About this listen

After breaking up with her bad-news boyfriend, Reagan O’Neill is ready to leave her rebellious ways behind...and her best friend, country superstar Lilah Montgomery, is nursing a broken heart of her own. Fortunately, Lilah’s 24-city tour is about to kick off, offering a perfect opportunity for a girls-only summer of break-up ballads and healing hearts. But when Matt Finch joins the tour as its opening act, his boy-next-door charm proves difficult for Reagan to resist, despite her vow to live a drama-free existence. This summer, Reagan and Lilah will navigate the ups and downs of fame and friendship as they come to see that giving your heart to the right person is always a risk worth taking. A fresh new voice in contemporary romance, Emery Lord’s gorgeous writing hits all the right notes.

Rebel on a music tour

What did you love best about Open Road Summer?

Reagan O'Neill is a bad girl who has just been cheated on by her loser boyfriend so she decides to follow her best friend and singer Lilah Montgomery across the country. What I liked about Reagan is that she is hard core and has a brittle front that puts most people off. It is Matt Finch, who joins the tour to pose as Lilah's boyfriend, who figures out Reagan is like him in many ways. This was narrated PERFECTLY by Rebecca Gibbel! She had the right voices for Matt, Lilah, Reagan and others. I enjoyed listening because the narrator got the pitch and tone right. What will happen to bad girl Reagan as good guy Matt begins to strike a chord in her heart?

What other book might you compare Open Road Summer to and why?

Emmie and Oliver by Robin Benway

Which character – as performed by Rebecca Gibel – was your favorite?

Reagan and Lilah were my favorites

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No while I worked out in hourly increments

Had a good core story but it was missing something

Would you listen to Open Road Summer again? Why?

Maybe once more to get my wrap my head around it. I felt like it moved to fast at some times, like the writer was trying to get to a point so she sped through a chapter to get to another one.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Slow it down at some points also I wish there was a little more in depth back story. Yeah we got some back story but only the tip of the iceberg.

What does Rebecca Gibel bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I liked how she sounded

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. at some points I feel like I didn't even want to finish it.

Great Story of Friendship and Summer

Beautiful and messy, the way life tends to be. It made me spend forever thinking about and appreciating my own best friend and reflecting on a boy who had all of Matt Finch's heart, humor, and fight but none of his insight or stubborn persistence. Too bad. Everyone needs a Matt Finch.
