About this listen

Brimming with heartfelt relationships and authentic high-school dynamics, The Start of Me and You proves that it's never too late for second chances.

It's been a year since it happened - when Paige Hancock's first boyfriend died in an accident. After shutting out the world for two years, Paige is finally ready for a second chance at high school...and she has a plan. First: Get her old crush, Ryan Chase, to date her - the perfect way to convince everyone she's back to normal. Next: Join a club - simple, it's high school after all. But when Ryan's sweet, nerdy cousin, Max, moves to town and recruits Paige for the Quiz Bowl team (of all things!) her perfect plan is thrown for a serious loop. Will Paige be able to face her fears and finally open herself up to the life she was meant to live?

The narrator ruins it

This is my favorite book and I couldn't get past the first chapter without returning it. The narrator is a robot and butchers the boys voices. Get an actual paperback version of this book because it's a good one!

Better for MG readers

Paige, still mourning the death of her boyfriend almost a year ago, plans to get back into her life with specific steps like joining a school activity and kissing her crush Ryan.

THE START OF YOU AND ME reads more like a middle grade story than young adult due to its complete lack of edge and predictability. Paige is sad, her family is complicated, then she’s not sad and her family is less complicated. She has a great group of friends, which expands with little conflict, becomes friends with her crush and his cousin. Her parents are mostly ideal. Sure, she’s mourning as anyone would be, but all the other pieces of life are set to support her. Older teens will probably be bored through this slow read.
