About this listen

A thrilling exposé recounting how members of Opus Dei—a secretive, ultra-conservative Catholic sect—pushed its radical agenda within the Church and around the globe, using billions of dollars siphoned from one of the world’s largest banks.

For over half a century, Banco Popular was one of the most profitable banks in the world—until one day, in 2017, when the Spanish bank suddenly collapsed overnight. When investigative journalist Gareth Gore was dispatched to report on the story, he expected to find yet another case of unbridled capitalist ambition gone wrong. Instead, he uncovered decades of deception that hid one of the most brazen cases of corporate pillaging in history, perpetrated by a group of men sworn to celibacy and self-flagellation who had secretly controlled Popular and abused their positions there to help spread Opus Dei to every corner of the world.

Drawing on unparalleled access to bank records, insider accounts, and exclusive interviews with whistle-blowers from within Opus Dei, Gore reveals how money from the bank was used to lure unsuspecting recruits—some of them only children—into a life of servitude. He also tracks the ascent of Opus Dei within the United States, exposing its role in bankrolling many right-wing causes, including the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade.

In an era of disinformation and deep fakes, here is a real-life conspiracy which hid in plain sight for more than sixty years. Gore tells a shocking story of money and power that spans decades and continents. Documenting Opus Dei’s secret history for the first time, this thrilling work of investigative storytelling raises important questions about the dark forces that shape our society.

Poor Narration

This is a really important subject, and it was just a beat down of a read thanks to the author narrating their work.

ASTONISHING!

It's just too horrific to be true, but it is. Understand that most Catholics do not know anything about this secret society deeply imbedded within the Catholic Church. It makes for a chilling ahd fascinating read. You just cant make this stuff up. However, it has deepened my understanding of why the right thinks the way they do, it's all linked to their false religious ideology. I just hope they repent before Jesus comes back because he is going to bring his justice for all to see. No nefarious groups and secret societies will be hidden in darkness, anymore.

Eye Opening

Very insightful expose of the surreptitious workings of a group that might be doing something wrong given the measures they go to. I'll let you decide. I know you won't be disappointed!

Enthralling listen

If you’re interested in conspiracy or the Catholic Church you’ll love this book. I heard Gore on Straight White American Jesus and picked it up immediately.

fascinating and disturbing

This book was distressing in many ways but difficult to put down. I know Opus Dei has officially denounced it which makes me think it exposes more than a little truth. The narrative certainly dovetails perfectly with what we know about The Federalist Society, Project 2025 and the extremism of the current US supreme Court.

The sad truth is that this is likely to ignite anti-Catholic sentiment in the same way that Netanyahu ignites anti-Semitism. We all suffer when extremists hi-jack cultures.

Boring clickbait (UPDATED after second attempt)

Just got my refund after giving it a second go. CONFIRMED: bad writing and banal descriptions. Only gullible people devour these types of quick conspiratorial reads. The narration is terrible and it's immediately clear how inexperienced this journalist is. People will suspend their disbelief for anything just to confirm their preexisting biases. Such a shame, because I hoped this book would shed new light on Opus Dei. Read the other one-star reviews, apparently most of the information is fabricated. LAME.
