About this listen

Folger Shakespeare Library, The World’s Leading Center for Shakespeare Studies

The Folger Shakespeare Library, home to the world’s largest Shakespeare collection, brings Othello to life with this new full-length, full-cast dramatic recording of its definitive Folger Edition.

In Othello, Shakespeare creates powerful drama from a marriage between the exotic Moor Othello and the Venetian lady Desdemona. Shakespeare builds many differences into his hero and heroine, including race, age, and cultural background. Yet most audiences believe the couple’s strong love would overcome these differences were it not for Iago, who sets out to destroy Othello.

This new full-cast recording - based on the most respected edition of Shakespeare's classic - expertly produced by the Folger Theatre, is perfect for students, teachers, and the everyday listener.

Good cast

The cast was great. But some of the back audio was annoying at times and sometimes too loud. But overall it was a good version. I'm happy with my purchase.

Exceptional Reading!

Loved every minute of it. I struggle to paint the picture of what I am reading but this audible reading, as I followed the hard copy book, was so easy to picture every seen. 100% recommended!!

Othello- iago my dude, what's your beef with Othello.

Overall I liked the story, my only criticism about it is with iago, kind of felt there was a lack of motives for the real hatred for Othello, no explanation whatsoever, Iago's character could have been deciphered more into it's character I like that he's a villain, cunning and deceptive but where does all this hatred derives from? Othello over blinded by jealousy , commits atrocious acts but I wish things could have been explained.

Great voice actors

True be told, I only bought this book for my English class... but the voice actors were fantastic. They were easy to listen to and understand, even with the Shakespearian language.

Shakespeare, The master of Tragedy

This story like Romeo and Juliet, is such a roller-coaster of happiness and tragedy, human flaws and human pain. Even just half listening to the story is emotionally moving, and it almost brought me tears.

I usually don't listen to stories like this, but when I do I cry manly tears.

Excellent!

The full cast audiobook version is by far the best way to listen to Shakespeare! This was my fifth one and I have loved them all! I give Othello 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

Terrible performance!

The “actors” -I use that term loosely here- are awful! Everyone is so flat like they’re reading it straight off the page with no effort or regard to the context of the story. Perfunctory. I had to stop after 30 minutes and I found a recording on YouTube via the Shakespeare Network channel which was much much better.
