About this listen

H. E. Marshall’s classic children’s chronicle of Britain, Our Island Story, includes all the best-loved (and most infamous!) stories from history: King Alfred and the cakes, King John and the Magna Carta, Lord Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar, Queen Elizabeth and the Spanish Armada, and many others. This recording contains the complete and unabridged text, released previously in separate volumes. It is read with aplomb by Anna Bentinck and Daniel Philpott.

Excellent, although chapters 111-114 are omitted

Slight differences in wording from my print version throughout. Chapter 110 is VERY different, and chapters 111-114, which are in the print version, are missing. I assume there is some explanation relating to editions or copyright, but not sure what it is.

This IS COMPLETE

Unlike another reviewer said, this version IS COMPLETE. It contains all 110 chapters that are in the book. Being Americans, I also appreciate my children being able to hear a British accent, unlike other versions. We are listening to this as part of the AmblesideOnline curriculum. We LOVE the stories!

Not complete and edited

My book has 114 chapters, this went to 110. This audiobook also had a habit of eliminating parts and editing some. I understand it was probably for politically correct reasons, but our children are missing out on knowing the truth of hurtful words used in the past. By eliminating them, we miss out on a great opportunity to have meaningful discussions with them about what was “right” then but we have learned we were wrong. We miss out on having them learn from the mistakes of the past and therefore repeat such horrors again. And besides changing words/phrases, I did not appreciate religious parts being completely removed when this book is labeled as “Complete and Unabridged”.

Besides those grievances, the story was good, and the readers read well. I wish the poems included in the story would have had a reference to what was being quoted. Not being British, these references were not familiar. Thankfully a good search online helped to find the sources.

NOT Complete at all!

What would have made Our Island Story (Complete) better?

This only has 34 of 110 chapters. When it says complete, I expect complete.
