About this listen

Thornton Waldo Burgess (1874-1965) was a conservationist and author of children's stories. Burgess loved nature and its wild animals so much that he wrote about them for 50 years in books and his newspaper column, Bedtime Stories. The delightful Adventures of Sammy Jay combines humorous animal escapades with gentle lessons about wildlife and nature, while The Burgess Bird Book for Children (1919) is a classic nature book which introduces young listeners to the subject of bird life by means of a series of interviews within a story. Peter Rabbit and Jenny Wren interview Slaty the Junco, Redwing the Blackbird, Melody the Wood Thrush, Spooky the Screech Owl, and many other birds to learn about their appearance, their eating, mating and nesting habits, and their songs and calls. In The Burgess Animal Book for Children, Old Mother Nature holds a school for the animals every day at sun-up. She helps them all obtain a better understanding of the mammals of North America.

The book is amazing! The narrator is ok. He mispronounces Phoebe as Feeb instead of Fee Bee. There is one particular word for a cat that is sadly no longer appropriate for kids.

Wonderful Story!

I enjoyed listening to some of the stories I loved as a child. But I would hate for young children to learn the pronunciations of birds' names by listening to this narrator. Perhaps the most egregious mispronunciation was when the nuthatch was called a "new thatch", even though the description of the bird makes it plain that the name comes from the "nut hatch's" name comes from its habit of "hatching" nuts such as beech nuts and such.

I couldn’t even listen to fifteen minutes and I would never have children listen. The narrator’s cadence is forced and unnatural, rising in the middle of each sentence and at the end. Pick a different version.
