Publisher's summary

In this powerful new collection of oil paintings and stories, President George W. Bush spotlights the inspiring journeys of America’s immigrants and the contributions they make to the life and prosperity of our nation.

The issue of immigration stirs intense emotions today, as it has throughout much of American history. But what gets lost in the debates about policy are the stories of immigrants themselves, the people who are drawn to America by its promise of economic opportunity and political and religious freedom - and who strengthen our nation in countless ways.

In the tradition of Portraits of Courage, President Bush’s number-one New York Times best seller, Out of Many, One brings together 43 full-color portraits of men and women who have immigrated to the United States, alongside stirring stories of the unique ways all of them are pursuing the American Dream. Featuring men and women from 35 countries and nearly every region of the world, Out of Many, One shows how hard work, strong values, dreams, and determination know no borders or boundaries and how immigrants embody values that are often viewed as distinctly American: optimism and gratitude, a willingness to strive and to risk, a deep sense of patriotism, and a spirit of self-reliance that runs deep in our immigrant heritage. In this audiobook, we meet a North Korean refugee fighting for human rights, a Dallas-based CEO who crossed the Rio Grande from Mexico at age 17, and a NASA engineer who as a girl in Nigeria dreamed of coming to America, along with notable figures from business, the military, sports, and entertainment. President Bush captures their faces and stories in striking detail, bringing depth to our understanding of who immigrants are, the challenges they face on their paths to citizenship, and the lessons they can teach us about our country’s character.

As the stories unfold in this vibrant book, listeners will gain a better appreciation for the humanity behind one of our most pressing policy issues and the countless ways in which America, through its tradition of welcoming newcomers, has been strengthened by those who have come here in search of a better life.

Read by President George W. Bush, with additional audio provided by many of the paintings’ subjects.

*This audiobook includes a full-color PDF of all of the portraits and murals featured in the book.

Immigrants are the backbones of this great nation.

This book reminds all Americans the goals that our ancestors had for us future generations. As a 1st American generation, I took advantage of all the opportunities that this country had to offer. Now, I’m taking part in helping to end this pandemic by immunizing our fellow Americans. My children have continued my parents hard work ethics and have graduated from college and are too contributing to our society as healthcare workers. We all need to be reminded that immigrants want the best for their family and country. I’m proud to be an American!! Thank you President Bush for the inspiring stories. This book makes me want to work harder, contribute more, and donate more of my time to charities.

A Pleasant Surprise

I picked this audiobook by accident because I had intended on getting the Portraits of Courage audiobook instead. Nevertheless, I enjoyed every minute of this audiobook and hearing all the stories of immigrants who now call the U.S. home. I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who has never picked up a book on immigration and immigrants.

Inspiring & Encouraging Book!!

I loved this book because the stories that George W. Bush shared were so inspiring. The motivation that drove each person he spoke about all because of someone who cared enough to have compassion. That’s what America should be about love, freedom, and determination to want to succeed. I enjoyed this book so much it has encouraged me to go get my citizenship. Thank you Mr. Bush.

A great book

A great book for immigrants seeking the promises of the land of freedom(America). I personally find Carlos Rovelo’s advice for future immigrants very touching.

How we got here... Relief.

It took a while to adjust to the accent and pronunciation of some words.
But, it was absolutely fine because the content was so rich.
Thank God for people who see the value of others.
Thank you, President Bush for such a loving, caring book.
I think it should be required reading.
It highlights the struggles some immigrants go through.
Pirates robbing boatloads of refugees. They are risking their lives to get away. For a long time.
But, once here the drive they have to learn, give back and to be so patriotic. Puts some Americans to shame.

Great Book!

I wish this was required reading for every American, especially those who are afraid of immigrants. Except for Native Americans, all Americans have ancestry that goes back to immigrants. For me, I am so glad my ancestors were allowed to enter and stay in America even though they were poor and did not speak English.

Beautiful book filled with emotion

As for the policy GW stands for we’re miles apart. However he really cares for people and the history of this nation.

Worth reading

I listed to this book because I am a fan of President Bush, less that a burning interest in the subject.

I greatly enjoyed hearing the stories of the Americans President Bush featured in the book. Their success stories are inspiring.

The President read his portion of the narrative, then the subject of each segment spoke. The only part of this which seemed superfluous, was that the President read part of the subject’s story, then the subject read the same story almost verbatim. It seemed unnecessarily repetitious.

The book and the stories told are worth your time.
