About this listen

Hot on the heels of her multiaward-winning debut, In the Bleak Midwinter, Julia Spencer-Fleming delivers the latest captivating mystery in her acclaimed series.

When the local doctor disappears from the small town of Millers Kill, New York, it doesn't take long for the gossip mongers to start insinuating foul play. Amid escalating suspicions that he was "disposed of" due to his ongoing fight to prevent authorities from cutting his clinic's funding, Episcopal priest Clare Fergusson and police chief Russ van Alstyne are enlisted to investigate. Neither could have bargained for what they discover, however, as they pursue an investigation that takes them deep into the past - to the Jazz Age, Prohibition, and the Great Depression - and to a series of sordid and horrifying secrets one family will risk everything to keep hidden.

Best in the series so far!

I don’t know why this author isn’t more well-known. She is a very good writer and the characters are relatable. They are imperfect and flawed, but likable and I always root for them. Definitely recommend!

I haven't been this excited with an author in years!

Best of the first three storylines! Julia knows how to balance a book. Just the right amount of humor, drama and even a sprinkling of spirituality! Narrator brings EACH character to life! Perfect inflection.
PS I also haven't been this excited since I discovered Diane Mott Davidson!
PPS if anyone feels up to correcting my grammar, please do so. LOL

My favorite so far in the series.

The plot is unique and complex. I especially enjoyed the flashback chapters from Mrs. Ketchum in the 1920s. It lead me to research the Adirondacks and their geography. Maps seem to bring a story to life for me even if Miller's Kill is a fictional town. Suzanne Toren's narrative helped me to appreciate the personalities and emotions of the characters especially Rev. Claire Ferguson. On to book four!

Multilayered Story

This audiobook reminded me that there is always more to a story. This is especially true when it comes to family dramas. Spenser-Fleming weaves a wonderful tapestry of love, morality, history, sorrow, mystery, murder and needless death in Out of the Deep.

Amen

Suzanne, your rendition of Clare has the perfect nuance of a Carolinian absorbing the upper-state NY speak. One thing which may have already been brought to your attention is that we Episcopalians say “AH-men,” not “AY-men.” I look forward to reading your next book!

More Intrigue in the Adirondacks

Another excellent book based in small town Adirondacks. Anyone familiar with North Country looking for an easy escape, this book is a real page turner. Loved it.

Good Story but....

I have never heard a priest or minister EVER use the Lord's name in vain. Disappointing to hear.
