About this listen

What if you're a suburban mom with a snarky sense of humor and a wild imagination prone to dreaming up disasters? What if you and your friends take your daughters for a camping trip, and while on a quick trip to the nearest country market you see a man being bullied and then beaten? What do you do? Back away quietly? Not if you're Molly Deacon, who, along with her Mittyesque imagination, has a temper not to be trifled with.

Stepping in to rescue Alan Cartwright has consequences far beyond what Molly could ever imagine, and she must find hidden reserves of strength to survive a terrifying chase through a foggy night.

Carolyn Nash's first book, Raising Abel, is a memoir of raising her horrifically abused adopted older son. The pen name "Carolyn Nash" was taken to protect her son's privacy. Carolyn and her family live in Northern California.

Engaging, Short Mittyesque Suspense

If you could sum up Out of the Fog in three words, what would they be?

Suspenseful, Thought provoking, Heartwarming

What was one of the most memorable moments of Out of the Fog?

When Molly stepped out of the bystander crowd and confronted the bullies.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The narrator had good pacing and did well keeping interest. She struggled with the male main character sounding too much like her villains (pinch-voiced and raspy).

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

One Woman's Standalone Heroism Leads to a Night of Terror

Any additional comments?

The story was engaging through and through, but the reader/listener has to pay close attention to the swift changes between Molly's daydream disaster thoughts and the real situation (this is on purpose as that is how the reader is supposed to feel at times), but it can be confusing staying on track. And the ending is complete in the essentials, but abrupt.

Great suspense and danger. Loved it!

Any additional comments?

Out of the Fog by Carolyn Nash is a suspense thriller with a heroine who tends to have one heck of an imagination and a snarky sense of humor. Narrated by Ilyana Kadushin I quickly slipped into the tale and listened in a single sitting. At just about two and half-hours it is the perfect listen for travel.

Nash tells a compelling tale in this short that allows us to learn about the characters, the town and those pursuing Molly all while notching up the thrills. We join Molly as she must outwit her pursuer in the backwoods and I loved how her vivid imagination came to her aid. I liked Molly even when she was terrified she kept it together and I would like to think I would have responded similarly.

Ilyana Kadushin did a wonderful job of narrating conveying both Molly’s fear and her humor. She helped set the tone giving me an enjoyable experience. Copy provided by publisher.

Needs better descriptions for sounds

Performance was fantastic and the story was good, but anytime a sound needed to be described she used the same thing. “The familiar pa-keta pa-keta sound of the gun.” “The branches brushed against the car with a pa-keta pa-keta.” “The helicopter engine made a pa-keta pa-keta sound.” It got to be little annoying.
