About this listen

An inheritance that comes with a warning.

Ashley Brooks’s life isn’t working out as planned. After years of struggling to make it in Hollywood, she’s still waiting for her big break. When fate leads her to the doorstep of legendary casting director Louisa Lake George, Ashley thinks her luck is about to change: the prickly old pro knows about a role she’s perfect for. The aspiring actress never gets to thank her, though, because the day after the audition, Louisa is dead. The bigger shock—she left all her money to Ashley.

Louisa’s grown children arrive stunned and ready to fight. Her nephew tries to play peacemaker, while Ashley grapples with why Louisa would leave her fortune to a stranger—and whether she should keep it. But Ashley quickly discovers everyone, including the dead woman, is hiding something, and it’s a race to get to the truth before someone else winds up dead.

Critic reviews

Over Her Dead Body is a psychological thrill ride that takes us into world of Hollywood and the heart of a family with deeply hidden secrets. Susan Walter is a master storyteller with an insider's view of the film business, and her novel glints with danger and brilliant insight into the hopes and dreams of an aspiring actress. I read it in one sitting, guessing the whole way through, stunned by the conclusion.”—Luann Rice, New York Times best-selling author of The Shadow Box and Last Day

“Where there’s a hefty will, there’s a way. With its eccentric ensemble cast and all the family drama of Knives Out, Over Her Dead Body is darkly funny and highly entertaining with more twists than a bus tour through the Hollywood Hills. Fans of Janet Evanovich and Elle Cosimano will be delighted.”—Tessa Wegert, author of Death in the Family

Over Her Dead Body is a whodunnit with more twists and turns than a boardwalk roller coaster, where secrets abound and nothing is what it seems. If you're looking for a book that will keep you turning pages deep into the night, Susan Walter has absolutely written one.”—Barbara Davis, bestselling author of The Keeper of Happy Endings

Sneaky, cinematic thriller

Wow. At the beginning, this book fooled me into thinking it was going to be just okay, maybe even a little silly. But it was a sly thriller indeed. Highly cinematic— I could see the movie in my mind. Highly recommended!

Good Story Great Characters

The cast of characters made this story. They were all so unique and having their own literal voice narrated clearly added to the depth of their personalities. Nice twists and plot divinations. Overall a great listen.

Enjoyed all the twists. Almost every chapter changed your perspective of who to feel bad for. The different narrators added to the fun.

Fun and twisted

If you’re looking for a book to get you out of a reading slump…this is the book for you!
It’s been a minute since I‘ve been able to pick up a thriller and not put it down until I was done, but y’all this had a little bit of everything you want in a great book.
A Hollywood wanna be actress, an adorable dog, creepy house, BFF marriage pact, love at first sight mixed in with an absurdly kooky family with manipulative and devious tendencies especially when the manipulative Matriarchs large inheritance becomes at play…you will find yourself flying through those pages figuring out what could possibly be next.
Creative, shockingly fun with twists you won’t be able to resist.

The character development was savvy and totally relatable. Winnie’s sarcasm brings all the giggles. So good!

Fast Pace

The multitude of narrators were good the the book moved along at a good clip. The book repeated different events several times with the prospective of different characters which started to become annoying. Overall it was a good book.

Enjoyed listening

Although not perfect, I really enjoyed this listen. The ending gets a little twisted but it did surprise me and kept me entertained throughout. I liked the writing and the different viewpoints from the characters although sometimes it was somewhat repeat it was worth it to get the little twist of their point of view etc.

Very good

The same parts of the story are told from several of the characters perspectives. This adds a bit but I also felt it was just filler at times. Not really irritating though, just not sure how I felt about it yet. Good story.
