About this listen

Menedemos, the young dashing sea captain, and his helper, the scholarly Sostratos, are sea-traders from the Greek island of Rhodes. Fearless sailors, they will travel any distance to make a profit or to search for rich treasures.

While they trade in fineries such as wine and silk (and even, to the chagrin of many, peacocks), they live in dangerous times with pirates, thieves, and barbarians. As if avoiding death by the hands of these miscreants isn’t enough (particularly the barbarians from an obscure town called Rome), they are also caught between the political intrigues of Alexander’s former generals.

I’m a big fan of Harry Turtledove. I’ve read 40 of his books. All of my previous reads were from amongst his alternative history/sci-fi/fantasy titles.
This book, first in a 5 book series, is the first in a series that is clearly more historical fiction (which probably explains why he published it originally under a pseudonym that he seems to use for his more historical works). Great story. I was engrossed. I’m about to begin book 2. Thanks.

I was delighted to see Harry Turtledoves Hellenic Traders stories previously published under the pen name HN Turtletaub available on Audible.
These books are very accessible in that they allow one to vicariously inhabit the time just after Alexander the Greats conquests. I feel like books like this are an addendum to actual history.
For fans of authors like Steven Saylor or John Maddox Roberts these books will be familiar and enjoyable

I’ve met folks who constantly referred to the great writers of ancient times . I chose to read and listen to translations . It enhances my world view ! If only the average citizen would choose to broaden there horizons .

Stuck it out but it wasn’t a fun read. Leaned something of the life during that period , which was the only positive.

Boring, with some education
