Perseverance & kindness prevail

This is the second book in the Protector of the Small Quarter and follows Kel's goal to be a knight. What I liked most about this audiobook is the narrator's ability to capture action sequences as well as Kel's internal monologues. Kel is determined to be a knight, but she never loses track of her moral obligations. Highly recommended if you like female teen protagonists with your fantasy & swords.

Two versions of the book intermingled

This is not the fault of the narrator - I am not sure whether she read two different versions and someone did a bad blend, or she was given a mixed script - but the first 1/3 of the book is the UK translation (meters, kilograms) and the other 2/3 the American English is was written in (feet, pounds). For someone who has read the book several times, I found this very annoying.
I also agree with the previous reviewer that some of the voices (particularly Owen's) were just a little off. However, I thought that Berdadette Dunne did a great job with the other 3 books in this series.
Of the four, this is my least favorite listen. (Squire is my favorite).
Plotwise, the book is excellent, spanning Kel's second through fourth years as a page. She makes new animal friends and new human friends and enemies as she gets ready for her final trial as a page, with (of course) lots of tests and tribulations, especially at the end. The development of Kel's new maid is particularly interesting to watch.

Excellent for more than just young adults

As one of my favorite books to read growing up, Bernadette Dunne provides a captivating performance in this audiobook edition. True to form, Pierce's intertwined characters and plots across multiple series in the land of Tortall contain treasures for consumers young and experienced in life. The feats that Keladry of Mindelan must overcome have inspired generations of youths to go forth and pursue a path less traveled, persisting despite the social and physical challenges, demonstrating strength of mind, soul, and body trained to their optimal potential. The Protector of the Small quartet inspired my upbringing and continues to invigorate my resilience as an adult. I would highly recommend this content for anyone in search of a story of adventure, impressive wills, and a creative world full of magic, real life trials, and lessons fulfilled in harmony by the story's end. The hardest part about these novels is when they finally come to an end. However, Pierce interweaves Tortallan timelines so satisfyingly that when thirsty for more, Pierce has decades of work shared for us to enjoy for hours beyond measure.

I love going back to this story when I'm feeling uninspired. It always gives me the energy to start caring a little more again:)

Love the book

I love this book it’s one of my favorites. The constant switch between imperial and metric measurements is off putting and that’s not how it is in the physical book I have no reference for what a half kilo is and then totaling 8 pounds a few minutes.

Pretty great

just a few pronunciation errors (IMO) of some of the names. There's only so much differentiation that can be done with voices and that's done pretty decently. I'll probably relisten when I start to miss tamora pierce's writing again lol.
