About this listen

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE EMPEROR OF OCEAN PARK, INSPIRATION FOR THE UPCOMING MGM+ ORIGINAL SERIES • A gripping political thriller set against the backdrop of Watergate, Vietnam, and the Nixon White House.

Philmont Castle is a man who has it all: wealth, respect, and connections. He's the last person you'd expect to fall prey to a murderer, but then his body is found on the grounds of a Harlem mansion by the young writer Eddie Wesley, who along with the woman he loves, Aurelia Treene, is pulled into a twenty-year search for the truth. The disappearance of Eddie's sister June makes their investigation even more troubling. As Eddie and Aurelia uncover layer upon layer of intrigue, their odyssey takes them from the wealthy drawing rooms of New York through the shady corners of radical politics all the way to the Oval Office and President Nixon himself.

Suspense

Tantalizing take on and reinvention of historical events. “Fictionalization” of familiar historical characters, who almost become relatable. The story poignantly uncovers the brutalities of war, the personalities of domestic unrest, and the unrelenting ego of power brokers. The protagonist is an unlikely superhero: graduating college with the goal of becoming a writer (in defiance of his parents), loving a woman who marries another man, seeking his missing sibling for almost two decades, uncovering a political plot to infiltrate American democracy, surviving multiple assassination attempts and torture, and on and on…! The audiobook is a long listen, but worth the time and energy. The story intensifies chapter to chapter. Stephen L. Carter is a talented writer. Great narration.

Outstanding

I thought there were many twists and turns throughout the book. I enjoyed how he used dates and locations which kept me intrigued. There was romance, passion and loyalty. To think that her sister had to live the life she lived was heartbreaking. The ending was came with a good closure, marriage, his inability to remain in contact with his sister and the threat of a killer. I was engaged the entire time.

Intrigue and history

Wow the story was gigantic in characters, suspense, plots, love and history. The writer was too clever though, just like the protagonist - what a pest. I’m definitely going to read more from the author. I love clever men of the darker nation.
